That sucks, and looking at the windshield, had to be one very hard hit from behind.

Nicky is a giant of motorcycle racing. I didn't even know he bicycled, too. I hope he pulls through.

Lots of motor sport people cycle. Mark Webber was taken out a few years ago, fortunately not as badly as Nicky. We shouldn't forget that the victim's profile makes this crash no worse than one involving Joe the Goose from round the corner, but hopefully his higher profile will help highlight the problems we face.

Yeah, that's terrible news about Nicky. I'm much more of a motorcyclist than a bicyclist - both are incredibly dangerous, but on a motorcycle I feel most incidents (except freak'n deer, which I've hit a few) are under my control. Bicycling risk, however, the risk is mostly under others' control. If cars are an elephant stampede, a motorcyclist would be a leopard, and bicyclist a tortoise.

It is now being reported that he died from his injuries. Tremendously sad.

It would be great if this was used to increase awareness about cyclist deaths at the hands of motorists, but I fear that even if it is presented in such light in US press, there will be more emphasis on the fact that this happened in Italy than anything else. Y'know, 'cause we don't have such problems here...

There have been unconfirmed media source reports and a host of online conversations that Nicky proceeded through a stop sign at the intersection without stopping and was struck. However, I located the intersection he rode up to on Google Maps and it has not one, but two, very visible stop signs, so it seems less than plausible that he would have missed them both and proceeded on through.
Regardless of whose fault it was, it's a terrible tragedy. RIP.

He has died from his injuries. Still no word in major media about how the crash actually happened.

News sources report there is a home surveillance video which captured the accident. It has been turned over to the local police, who have an ongoing investigation.
As you can see, the side road is shielded by hedges. If Mr. Hayden ran this stop sign, he would have been visible to the driver (traveling left to right on the main road in this view) for only milliseconds before the collision.

Here's the reverse view, with labels according to the news reports:

Mr. Hayden won at numerous levels from local competition to the world stage, and he was popular with motorcycle road racing fans. His victorious 2006 MotoGP World Championship campaign, on the relatively heavy and immensely powerful 1000cc bikes used only that year, was intelligent and methodical.

This has hit a close friend hard. He is a retired off road racer and knew him personally . Off road motorcycle racing takes strength and endurance a lot of these guys train on bikes. I have heard he ran the stop . As of now it doesn't matter who is at fault because you can't fix dead. My Brother in law hit an older lady who ran a stop sign she shouldn't have been driving , he still has nightmares even though it was not his fault
