Please stop. Think. Just stop. W23rd is 30 feet wide. Even with cars parked on both sides, that leaves a 15 foot wide travel lane.

Updated report suggests different narrative...

Viewing the video in slow motion, it appears the bus's wheel well clipped Hanegby's handlebars, causing the front wheel to twist right.
from 'The Gothamist', who viewed video obtained by a friend of the cyclist.

Video Contradicts Reports That Citi Bike Rider Swerved Into Bus Before Deadly Crash: Gothamist

The article also says that Dan was not wearing a helmet (which would not have mattered), but was wearing headphones, which based on the description did not matter.

-Dan did not swerve into the bus
-The bus was overtaking him
-The bus may have clipped Dan's handle bar, or he may have been startled by an overtaking bus inches away.
-A passenger on the bus confirms the description

Regardless, a family is without a husband and father, who's grief I cannot comprehend.

Full stop. There is no may.

A second video, angled against traffic....

Hanegby does not swerve. When the bus clips his bike, he can be seen falling down to the street.

I'm glad for the Gothamist and NY Times article, and I'm glad Samponaro and De Blasio are calling foul.

Ditto.

Bicycling too.

Related:

When sussing out blame at the scene of bike accidents, most police officers are motorists, and many see the world from that perspective

I'll add two more. Most reporters are motorists. I'm glad that some reporters ride bicycles.
And, frankly, too many people on bicycles think it can't happen to them.

I didn't pay attention to the captions, but I just read it, and noticed it said that earlier on, witnesses reported that the cyclist lost balance, which could cause him falling under the wheel. (Clarify: talking about the video I linked last page, a Brazil case, not the Citi bike case)

Now this seems to have become a pattern: bus/truck speeds past a cyclist closely (or even brushing him/bike), cyclist falls, gets run over. Witness/police reports the cyclist lost balance first.

        I don't have to imagine.

FWIW, around here (and many other places) truck operators and bus operators hit bridges.

Nobody blames the bridges. (Is there a bridgeforums.net?)

Sadly, it didn't take long for another within a few days and a few blocks: http://gothamist.com/2017/06/17/cycl..._bus_drive.php

I guess the NYPD strategy of ticketing cyclists in response to a bus crashing into a cyclist didn't stop more buses from running into more cyclists afterall.

Lord. I was actually thinking of riding to the 26th street to take a look at the location where Hanegby was killed, then thought may not worth it if on my way I get run over by a bus/truck, too.

P.S. I can't help but wondering how many fatal bike accident victims Bellevue Hospital has seen.

Another report of the accident: 80-year-old man riding bike struck and killed by bus | New York Post

[Driver:] “I was driving the bus, but when I looked, I didn’t see anybody. When I heard the thump, I didn’t see anything. He was laying over there on he ground, in the crosswalk.”
Addendum: picture of the charter bus that killed 80 year old Michael Mamoukakis Saturday. (screenshot from video Bicyclist, 80, dies after charter bus crushes him in Manhattan - NY Daily News )

I'd disagree. They clearly have a protocol for enforcement. Whenever a person on a bicycle dies they ticket people on bicycles.

It seems that an element of zero vision is to save lives through ticket based education. Every time a bicyclist is killed in a traffic accident, they go on a blitz ticketing cyclists in that area, or sometimes city wide. I guess the assumption is that if ticketing successfully discourages bicycling, there'll be fewer out where they might get killed.

Makes sense in it's own perverted way.
