NYC peeps: reporting cars in Central Park before 7AM?

So a couple of taxis were cruising the West Drive at 6:52AM today. They're not supposed to be there before 7. I tried calling 311 (FYI: the City's general-purpose complaint / info number) and wasted about 17 minutes of my life because after giving all the info etc. they said that they needed an exact address to forward the complaint to the correct precinct. There has to be a way of specifying a place in the Park... anybody? For now, I'm simply going to have to 1) memorize all the car entrances and their cross streets, 2) find a precinct map, and 3) carry a pen in my jersey pocket so I can write the cab numbers on my arm (or license plate of other cars). I could get a little GPS unit too -- give 311 latitude and longitude. :D

The funny thing is that the City doesn't give two hoots about most reckless driving but apparently calling about cars in CP is normal (TA, a local adocaty group, encourages it).

You've got to much time on your hands and obviously not enough to worry about. Sure hope those kids stay off your lawn.

no way....there has been a tremendous effort to get cars out of central park. it's a compaign years in the making. everyone was pleased when the mayor announced extended car free hours. there are barriers in place to keep cars out during the car-free hours. apparently some of the police are opening them up early and letting cars in before the scheduled time.

it may not seem like a big deal, but we're talking about a park here. the road is used by runners, cyclists, joggers, everyone. if you're not expecting a car to fly around the corner, you could be in danger. i've been caught off gaurd before and it sucks.

Central Park has it's own precinct so figuring out which precinct to notify is a no-brainer - if you can catch them in the park.

I've personally seen so many cabs using the west drive during hours I that thought it was closed to traffic, that I didn't understand what all the fuss about a so-called Auto-Free park was supposed to be about. They probably make a regular habit of using the park figuring they'll be out, back in traffic, before the cops catch up with them.

Thank god for the people with time on their hands to do something about things like this. If more people do something about it, maybe the cops will enforce the rules.

Your last sentence is just rude.
