Winnipeg cyclist hit while riding on sidewalk

A female cyclist was struck by a car on Provencher Blvd - just metres from where the Winnipeg police were holding a press conference on road safety. The unidentified woman, who was taken to hospital in stable condition, was allegedly cycling eastbound on the north sidewalk about 11 AM yesterday when she collided with a vehicle that appeared to have a green light annd was heading southbound on Alneau street.

It would appear she ( the cyclist) was on the sidewalk, Winnipeg police Sgt. Gary Sewchuk told hte winnipeg Sun. "There's a lot of reasons why people shouldn't be riding on the sidewalk. This may be an example of one reason".

Police were unveiling an intersection saftey camera pole that had been painted by students from a nearby school when the outdoor press conference on the median just west of Alneau was interrupted by the collision. Witnesses reported hearing a "crunching" sound speculated the cyclist was likely distracted by the media, police and the students gathered for the press conference.

Sewchuk said cyclists and pedestrians can't forget they're as much a part of traffic as motorists. Officers sy hte injured cyclist was complaining of pain but her injuries appeared to be minor.

There's a lot of reasons why people shouldn't be driving on the sidewalk either! If she really was on the sidewalk, the driver has some explaining to do.

I suspect she wasn't really on the sidewalk. More likely in the crosswalk, or even in the roadway. The motorist who hit her probably didn't see her and so isn't a credible witness to her location.
