Sensors will alert drivers at road crossings

Wow, as a cyclist, I would not trust the sensors, nor that drivers would properly respond.

Use your eyes and make sure it is safe.

Do I have it right? As a cyclist approaches, the driver's or pedestrian's phone will distract their attention away from the cyclist. And some think this is an improvement?

Half right, according to the article... peds and cyclists, with the app, get a warning... smart cars get a collision avoidance alert.

So essentially very few motorists, and only peds and cyclists with the app will "interact." Very limited... and frankly IMHO nothing to be depended upon.

I guess sensors in the path, and flashing traffic lights were just too "simple."

This is a case of technology used stupid.

This use of technology distracts from convention and is bound for ineffectiveness unless there is better saturation of use and the culture change to understand it.

In these parts, warning lights, even red lights, are not reliable enough to guarantee safe pedestrian or cyclist crossing. The only thing one should trust is your own eyes and ears.

Smart Road Stickers.

Just wondering. Have you all never heard “Car left!” “Car right!” “Clear!” from a smart person on a bicycle crossing an intersection? Or “Car back!” from someone behind you, or “Car up!” from someone in front of you?

THAT’S “V2V” communication. So “distracting.”

I for one appreciate it, but will STILL look both ways before crossing the street, and still watch for traffic ahead and behind.

As far as distracted drivers, I’m unaware of any lane departure warning systems or blind spot warning systems that have been blamed for crashes. ICE systems, yes, but....

No matter, except for a few brand new Caddys, Beemers and Benzes, nobody has V2V systems anyway, so no precious people in cars need be bothered at all, let alone distracted, by our presence. They’ll continue to blow through crossings without a care in the world, because no skin in the game.

So we are left with a high tech version of “CAR COMING” signs. But during the field test they’ll be able to gain experience. Baby steps.

(ps. The system is active and will detect people driving dumb motor vehicles, people riding dumb bicycles, and people walking in, uh, dumb shoes. If you want to get the messages you need a smart vehicle or a mobile app.)

I am going to completely ignore this system, not download the app, and use common sense like always. I didn't get old by being foolhardy.
