Cyclists Don't Break Rules: People Do

GCN's newest video is very interesting. I have noticed a number of news stories where vehicles were blamed for accidents or crimes. I think GCN has a point when they say that using "cyclist" blames everyone riding a bicycle.

The commentary focuses on the fact that headlines often point out "cyclist" in some fashion doing something illegal thus highlighting "cyclists" as lawbreakers. IE "Cyclist robs bank" hence "cyclists" are law breakers.

Now what they gloss over is the issue of cyclists as motorists and whether traffic laws are broken by a particular type of person, regardless of mode of travel. Clearly what is missing is the fact that "cyclists have skin in the game." Cyclists often take advantage of traffic situations due to their particular size (narrow and maneuverable) and vulnerability... thus stopping and waiting at an intersection may not be the best idea, as distracted motorists cruise up and fail to stop. Or waiting at a left turn arrow may not ever yield satisfaction as the light sensor fails to detect a cyclist. Or getting out in front of motor traffic may make one more visible, thus warrants jumping a light or two.

Generally cyclists are obeying "rules of the road" while they may be disobeying "traffic laws." And again... cyclists are doing so to take advantage of momentum, and due to being vulnerable... motorists tend to disobey traffic laws due to impatience... having little skin in the game, and the ability to abuse the power of the motor vehicle. (MORE POWER!)

anyway, my 2 cents... gotta get to work... so discuss at will.

But next time please don't pick a thumbnail that looks like you're going to talk about Shamwows. It's a very serious topic.
