Any non-helmet riders here?

Just curious, that's all.

PLEASE this is not a troll, but an honest poll/survey.

I guess I should add my preference here.

I do not wear a helmet, personal choice and all, blah, blah, blah. This is not the place to debate this and gwet further into my/your reasons for wearing/not wearing a helmet.

PLEASE DO NOT MAKE THIS A HELMET vs. NON HELMET THREAD!
IF YOU CANNOT STAY ON TOPIC, PLEASE DON'T POST!

I thank you all for your cooperation in advance.

I never wore a helmet until I got my road bike. There's a big difference riding slowly around a small town or a college campus with no traffic and riding around city streets at 25 mph dodging all sorts of traffic

Sometimes I wear one, sometimes not. Depends on the riding situation. For example, I wear one on riskier rides (like mountain biking) but usually not on less risky rides (like an isolated bike path or quiet neighborhood).

Helmet. I won a bike, and one of the rules was to wear a helmet that was also given me for 3 months. During three months were up the bike could have been taken away from me if I didn't wear it and was seen without it. Once the time elapsed, I still wore/wear the helmet, and always will. Some may see that rule a little harsh for a free bike and all, but it got me into the habit of wearing one, when I probably would not have.

Usually yes. For rides from school to work (1/2 mile), around the block, etc. I skip it. But for anything longer than a few minutes, yet.

I wear one. Too much $$ and time making my brain smart. (the jury is out on the rest of me) I even wear it in the shower in case I slip.

I wear one, it's white, because motorcycle cops/bike cops wear a white helmet too, and it's good for visibility. I've got a cheap $40 Giro and it's very comfortable.

Yes, generally--about half the time I'll get out the door and be halfway down the apartment complex parking lot, and realize that I don't have a helmet on, and I don't let it bother me if I'm just going out for a quick ride.

When around-town riding, grocery-getting, and commuting to work, no, I don't wear a helmet. However, when riding my road bike on highways and busier roads at higher speeds
and for longer periods, yes, I do wear a helmet. I wear it mainly for the greater visibility it gives - it's one more thing that will make me more visible to cars.

My husband wears his helmet for his commute to work, mainly because there seem to be so many hazards along the bike path he takes. He's fallen/crashed several times, once cutting his scalp
and needing staples. I think it's because he likes to ride his racing bike on the path, at speed, and it makes him go too fast for conditions!

Usually not, unless riding at night, mountain biking, or riding in the rain.

Always, even for short trips. My friend went down and bounced his head off the pavement. Cracked the helmet but he walked away without even a headache.

I always wear mine (well I once took it off going up a steep mountain when the sweat started streaming down my face).

I dont do chamois or lycra either

I also carry a living will and DNR papers with me at all times, there wont be any diapers involved.

I have worn a helmet on occasion, but I reserve that for group rides and races for when its dangerous, since I dont either of those actvities anymore, no helmet

No helmet.

But then I live in Holland. If I had to contend with motor vehicles, I'd probably wear one. Depends on the country I guess.

I always find usage rates interesting.

For 99% of my riding, I do.

In my province, I've seen 3 studies that show overall rates of 46%, 73% and 91%. I think the overall rate in Canada is about 45%.

I believe an estimate for the USAs' overall rate is somewhere around 33%, London, England is 18% (but the overall countries rate is much lower), Sweden is something like 15%, Spain is (something like) 12% but Germany, Italy, France and the Netherlands is very, very, low. India, China, Japan, south east Asia, Cuba, most of Africa, Central and South America, is very, very, low. Austrailia is very high but, like my province, it has an all ages mandatory helmet law, so I don't know if people are wearing them because they think it's a good idea to wear one, or because they have to or the won't be able to ride the bike without getting tickets and being made to walk home (I've seen this happen when they passed our MHL). Should mandatory law areas count because of this?

I agree with the plea to just find out how many wear helmets. The debate is up at the top in a sticky.
