You see, when mountain biking you should not assume the crashes will comenly result in death. most have to do with a fall, not a crash. your body is desinged to sustain falling impacts naturally. you can fall at speeds of up-to 25 m.p.h. and survive. hitting opsticles or falling off/with your bike often can result in broken bones, but hitting a car is much different while it is less common. When you are hit or hit another vehicle on the road it can cause interier bleading because an automobile can impact between your ribcage and hips, where as falling off-road lets your bones take the impact. The nature of awareness and the accident is often different too. When you are hit buy a car, you rarely know for shure it is about to cream you, thus your natureal reactions to put your hands up and unclip your pedals rarely help you in time, off road you commenly know you just messed up, and are ready for the impact even a full second or more before it occurs. Bottem line-if you call safety chance of crash, road os safer, but if we are talkin' chance of death, cross cuontry mountain biking is less deadly than road cycling.

it really depends on how you ride. there are plenty of MTB riders who ride in excess of 20 mph (some even claim around 35mph downhill). for me MTB doesnt make it any less dangerous compare to road cycling. in fact, I get more bruises and close calls when I do MTB than being on the road. at least with the road you can see where you are going way ahead. unlike mtb single tracks where you cant really see whats ahead specially if theres so many bends and drops (not to mention roots and loose dirt). there are only 2 major things to look out in road cycling and thats pots holes and cars. other than that its fairly straight forward.

A friend of mine broke his back whilst riding in the Welsh mountains. I almost broke my back too whilst on an MTB ride to Dorking. good thing I was wearing a spine guard which broke when i fell. hence the reason why I moved to road cycling (but I still do MTB once in a while). Ive also heard plenty of broken bones whilst riding MTB's but not so much with road cycling unless being hit by a car.

to sum it up. both MTB and Road cycling are equally dangerous whether on or off the road. it just depends on your riding style and skills. but accidents can happen anytime regardless

Road cycling with cars is MUCH more dangerous than mountain biking. Of course there are still dangers.......

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. (AP) — Initial tests conducted on a male mountain lion suspected of killing one biker and injuring another revealed human skin tissues found in its stomach, authorities said.

Footprints taken in Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park in Orange County had the same measurements and officials are fairly certain the cougar is responsible for both of Thursday's attacks. The 2-year-old mountain lion weighed about 110 pounds and was shot and killed Thursday night after it returned to the site where the body of a biker was found.

If I list cases where there was the potential for death or serious injury in my riding all save one would be road riding.

BUT not one of those involved a car. All road conditions. Going down during a fast decent can be fatal. And a not all that fast decent in the middle of nowhere can do the same.

The one on a MTN bike was my very first real off road ride on my MTN bike. Got my laces tangles in the gears, not big deal, just backpedaled to clear them. BUT I was not looking where I was going when I was looking down at the gears. I held my line just fine, but when I looked back up the dirt road I found a was fast approaching a really nice fat rattlesnake. (Fortunately I know which end is which of a snake).

Wasn't that guy out riding mountain bikes with his girlfriend, when a mountain lion came out of nowhere and mauled him to death, while she managed to escape?

I disagree. But that is probably because of my experience riding on the road in traffic. Whereas, I have absolutely no experience riding a mountain bike or on terrain suited for a mountain bike.

There are plenty of places here in United Kingdom where they have funny names. I even saw "Fartway lane", "Jackass road" and "Gaylord road"
