NYTimes: The Exceptionally American Problem of Rising Roadway Deaths

Lots of stuff in this article relevant to bicycles. American roadway deaths dropped like everyone else's due to seat belts and airbags. But every other rich country followed it up with roadway improvements to keep bikes and pedestrians from getting hit, and car improvements to reduce impact severity.

An abstract from the article, "In 2021, nearly 43,000 people died on American roads, the government estimates. And the recent rise in fatalities has been particularly pronounced among those the government classifies as most vulnerable — cyclists, motorcyclists, pedestrians."

there's adopting existing bicycle changes for safety, then there's trying other unknown ways that might not tick off drivers even more. I think USA should trying the later & set the bar even higher. Have the cake, & eat it too!
