Motorists Dooring Cyclists On Purpose

This happened recently in California. A cyclist's helmet camera captured footage of a motor vehicle's occupants intentionally dooring cyclists.

It looks like they got a pretty clear video of the license plate. It shouldn't be too difficult for law enforcement to find these clowns.

p.s.: they can issue them a ticket for running a stop sign, too.

Unless it was a stolen car which is a possibility being floated. I saw at least one article that mentions it could have been three cars in separate attacks. East Bay Bike Party Marred By Alleged Multiple Instances of Car-Dooring, Two Injured

It very well could be. The car shown in the video is a Hyundai. Those and Kias are two of the easiest cars to steal, unfortunately.

Pretty sure that's assault with a deadly weapon under California law whether or not they actually made contact, possibly at the felony level.

Statutory definition: "An assault is an unlawful attempt, coupled with a present ability, to commit a violent injury on the person of another."

If they actually make contact, it then becomes a crime of battery.

The trick is to capture them. If it was a group of morons in a stolen car, unless they are caught while driving, and then have the video come forward to connect them to the act, there's not much recourse for the cyclists.

If one of those scum is arrested, they should be charged with attempted murder. Then splash the fact a judge sentenced them to 40 years in jail all over the media. That might slow down that nonsense.

Depending on the jurisdiction, the perpetrators could be counting on being released on their own recognizance, then skipping trial.

Another reason to have protected bike lanes between the curb and parked cars.

Painted lines just don't cut it.

Yes there is, it's called staying out of the "Door Zone". It doesn't stop any other type of abuse from violent people.

The video shows that the bike lane is between the parking lane and the driving lane. So the cyclist is sandwiched between two door zones.

One may suggest to ride right in the driving lane but those kind of drivers would just run him over, side swipe him or just door him anyway.

The bike lane really needs to be between the curb and parked cars with a buffer zone of solid barriers.

You understand that if someone is going to intentionally open the passenger side door on you while moving, there's literally no part of the road that isn't door zone? I guess you could flee onto the opposite lane, but that puts you head-on into another vehicle's hood zone.

Which is precisely why I hate these types of bike lanes. Yes, having the bike lane between the curb and parked cars lessens the hazard. You could still be doored by a passenger in a parked car, but at least they won't possibly knock you into moving traffic.

Toronto bike lanes are between the curb and the parked cars. There's another 12 in buffer zone with bollards and concrete curbs before a passenger steps onto the bike lane. So a lot of the door space is taken up by the buffer zone before any remaining part protrudes into the bike lane. I've also seen bike lanes without all those obstacles but the 12 in. buffer zone is still there.

I don't think we have bike lanes positioned like that in the video.

I believe the Boston area has bike lanes like that.
