Neither of the two parties here were going very fast.

A lot of damage could be averted by people looking.

I agree, in this case neither was operating at high speed.

Our habits on the road are the result of our values: We value speed and convenience over life and limb. We operate in line with our values and our children absorb our values and habits.

It isn’t necessarily as complicated as that.

Habits are also the result of what you learn and what you practice. Many people don’t see driving or cycling as something that requires skill.

A lot of people don’t know how to look. They just lock their heads forward.

It’s possible both parties saw an empty parking lot and didn’t see the need to look because they expected no one was there.

That sums up s lot of todays society.

"oh I didnt see them, oh dear." whether they are being honest if responding with that, that is another story.

and all the other times they aren't within your grasp

I've reached a point now where I'm comfortable with their behavior & glad they moved out & living normal healthy adult lives. still a little terrified tho

but I've never loved anything or anyone, as much as I love my kids. I'm a better man for having them. Wifey is a saint
