One dead, one injured. Not cycling related, but this is for those of you who think it might be funny to piss off cagers:

To the teenage boys, egging the vehicles Sunday night was just a prank. So when one driver got out of his pickup truck and cursed at them, 16-year-old Jude Sayles didn't worry.

"I just figured that they'd call the police and that'd be the worst that would happen," Sayles said. "I didn't know he was going to shoot us."

These kids were just negligent and immature...All us as cyclists are aware of what drivers are capable of, whether it's engaging in verbal confrontation or resorting to violence. As cyclists, this story does not help us. Sure, we may get on the bad side of a few drivers but in the case for the laws that we must follow and that motorists don't understand.

Not to be mean or hostile, but this post is rather useless. Cyclists have been killed all the time whether it’s been shootings, collisions, etc. These were just kids who got on the bad side of one driver and paid the price. Though shooting was a bit harsh.

slvoid 08-07-05 05:59 PM

Good for the guy.

"The incident began around 11 p.m. when six or seven teenagers gathered at a Burger King. Some in the group, made up of both white and black youths, thought it would be fun to toss eggs at passing cars near Girls School and Rockville roads, said Sayles, who will be a freshman at Ben Davis this fall."

What if the egg hit someone in the eye, they crashed, and killed their 8 MONTH OLD TWINS? Sorry, you wanna do stupid $hit, pay the price.

Then again, I'm just bitter.

forum*rider 08-07-05 06:15 PM

Sounds like some jackasses around here. Some kids think it's funny to throw stuff off of freeway over passes, I don't blame the driver for getting angry.

But killing someone is over the line IMO, atleast in this situation. He should have called the police and maybe given them a mild beating if he was bored.

I really can't argue with that...You need to think about what your doing befire you take action. Bad things can happen, even if it is something as simple as throwing eggs.

I feel your anger! Damn teenagers are a PLAGUE I tell ya (I should know, I was quite the hellraiser/eco-terrorist in my time) STRING 'EM UP!

But then the "responsible gun owner" in me kicks in, and I can't abide this guys actions.
Deadly force is a special power only to be wielded in life threatened circs.

Anger isn't an excuse.
Only genuine fear for ones life, permits the taking of another.

slvoid 08-07-05 06:20 PM

Last year, a lady was almost killed when someone threw a frozen turkey off an overpass. Her face and skull were shattered.
I have to admit, this guy was pretty stupid. He should've run the kids over. A bullet is very small, hard to aim. A truck is a lot bigger, more momentum, easier to steer plus he can claim that the "moon was in [his] eye" and get away with it since he was, afterall, driving the almighty automobile.

Gun ownership comes with grave responsibility and a lot of people, enthuiasts, take this seriously and train on the range more than some cops do. They know what to do and what not to do and they're in control of their actions. Now, I'm no math number tweaker person but I'm willing to put money down that licensed owners are a lot more responsible and this guy didn't have a license for that particular firearm. Which is why licensing laws are a joke, I mean, seriously, do law makers think the guy who sprays a crowd with an AK47 is going to go and register it and get licensed?

I guess this is one of these things were some cyclist who got cut off decides to pull up next to a car, whip his 5lb kryptonite chain into the driver window, smashing it, breaking the guy's jaw, and biking away. Deep down inside, we all cheered a little but we also realize it wasn't the right thing to do.

bkaapcke 08-07-05 06:27 PM

Some motorists are pissed off before they even see youy. A "friend" told me; bike riders don't pay road taxes, sohe 'cuts them off, whenever he can. Well, I read him the riot act when I heard this and reminded him of the potential liabilities. It all fell on deaf ears. One less friend. However, on the way home, it occurred to me that he is not the only guy that thinks that way. There are lots of them. Be carefulo out there.

Bikepacker67 08-07-05 06:27 PM

Ya, that poor lady...
Total face reconstruction because a coupla testosterone-laden yahoos got an "IDEAR".

The fact is though... even if I witnessed that horrific and senseless crime - and chased down the perps, I wouldn't be in my rights to shoot them after the fact.

Even if they refused to halt and wait for the police.

qmsdc15 08-07-05 06:30 PM

Kill someone for egging your car? Are you joking? It seems an odd thing to joke about. Are you serious?

Bikepacker67 08-07-05 06:33 PM

How about killing someone for "frozen turkeying" your car?

What the hell are you talking about, SlVoid?? Good for the guy? I hope you are as far out on the periphery of reality that you are that most respondents feel as I do about your comments!!!

Wbere do you get off justifying a killing for something as sophmoric as the likes of you or I had done many times when we were of that age???

The kid was not involved in a robbery, ****, or so many other of the actions that we are so unfortunate to witness these days.. He was "egging a car"!!!!!!!

Your dreaming, dude!!!! I hope you identify yourself. I'd like to know who you are so I can keep my kids away from an idiot like you!!!!

Anthony King 08-07-05 06:54 PM

This has absolutely nothing to do with cycling.

KevinmH9 08-07-05 07:07 PM

'Bob Gabele' does have a point; though lashing out at Slvoid was really uncalled for. You can't really justify a shooting for an unsophisticated prank these teenagers acted upon. Both the teenagers and motorist just had a lack of responsibility for their own actions. Where the teenagers thought throwing eggs would be fun, could have turned out to be the same kind of accident the woman faced when a frozen turkey went through her windshield.

The motorist appeared to have a lack judgment and responsibility whereas he overlooked the incident more severely than it should have been, even after he had gotten out of the vehicle with no injuries. His lack of responsibility fell upon his improper use of the firearm. As a firearm owner, you need to be aware and full educated on when and where to use your gun. Using the gun to kill a harmless teenager crossed the line and the motorist should face justice. Guns should only be used in times of peril and you need it if your life is at risk, in this case the driver was not at any risk as he was already out of his car and sustained no injuries it appeared. The motorist is at fault and will be punished.

Really... that's funny cause I respond exactly like a lot of teenagers/grown adults with or without road rage. You better keep your kids away from new york city or any other densely populated city, along with angry drivers and drunks.
I'm not sure how kids can justify an evening of fun with killing someone by smashing a 10lb object at 70mph in their face either, I sure hope I know who all these damn teenagers are so I can stay the hell away from them during my commute.

Bob Gabele 08-07-05 07:14 PM

Thank You KinvinmH9

I agree that I lashed out a bit severely. But having checked out Slvoid's earlier posts, I became concerned about the fine line between his humor and any possibe reality. Here is one of his past posts:
The last time a truck passed me, slowed down, 2 little inner city girls waved at me with their lance armstrong livestrong yellow bracelets showing, they reached under the seat; then they went ahead and unloaded the entire clip of their 9mm semi at me.
I ducked behind the trailer they were towing but I counted the shots and when I knew they were empty, I grabbed onto the trailer with my left arm and started firing off my modified glock in full auto 3 round bursts. I managed to blow off their right side mirror but not before I saw the mother pulling out a tec from the glove compartment.
Both little girls ducked and just as I ducked, she started sprayin. So now I've got my empty glock in my mouth and I'm slowly working my way around the trailer to the left side of the car. I kept my left hand on the back of the trailer as she's towing me down the road at around 60mph, swerving between cars. A little old lady driving a ford escort noticed that my glock was empty, honked at me, rolled down her window and threw me an extended mag. I ejected the empty one, held the gun between my teeth and popped it in.
At this point, she serves to the right and I'm briefly thrown to the left side of her car, just as I make eye contact with her in the mirror, she empties her last 10 rounds at me, fortunately, I was wearing my kevlar jersey and it absorbed 2 rounds. Seeing as how she was also empty, I reached over, clicked it to full auto, braced the extended clip against my elbow and returned fire. I managed to tear off her left side mirror and blew both her left side tires but it seemed like she had run-flats cause she just kept going.
She threw her hands up in the air like, "well you got me, I'm empty." Anyway, she takes the off ramp and stops by a gas station to check on her tires, I got off my bike to help her inspect the holes in her car, made sure it didn't puncture any lines or anything and that's when I noticed that my rear tire was flat and the rim had half worn away. She asks me where I lived and I said about 60 miles away so she invited me to the picnic she was heading to and offered to drive me and my bike back home later in the evening.

Sure...I can understand his candor with the spirit of the post....or can I? How would my kids take it? I become concerned when certain impressionable individuals may read his bursts, inferring something other than, at least I cincerely hope, what he really means to project.

I stand ready to apologize for my intendedly direct comments, only if Slvoid comes back to better-explain his comments. Otherwise, I will stand.

Thanks for reading...

Johnson said he and another teen went back to the shooting location around 2 a.m. (3 hours later) and found Dunson (the dead boy) lying in a pool of blood.
I bet the cops are going to get sued, for not making sure all the kids were accounted for.

Actually, check out my thread on my upcoming business trip. While it's true that I probably haven't hung on to the back of a truck returning fire with a full auto glock while some angry mother of 2 is spraying me, what am I saying, PROBABLY, it's ABSOLUTELY not true and I honestly feel sorry for anyone who thinks it's the slightest bit real.
Anyway, back on topic, I don't think there's a need for you to apologize. Responses such as yours are to be expected. But I know (I used to be one) teenagers can be far worse than you can imagine, if your kids are great, never do drugs, never drink, never picked up a firearm, great, in certain areas of the city, I guarantee you, you'll be lucky if that's all your kids do. Ever watched that commercial that says "40% of all drugs are sold in the city"? Kind of makes you think where the other 60% are. I'm sure you also know how many close calls people here have had with teenagers driving by them at 60mph throwing beer cans at them.

So just because I don't have any sympathy for teenagers doesn't mean I'm right. You may be right, I may be wrong, but there's no need for you to apologize.

If your kids are out doing something as dangerous for the people in the cars as these kids were, then you should definitely keep them away from people that are fed up with those activities. As stated above, killing them was a bit over the line, by our present social standards, but what if a good D.A. decided to charge them with a felony for doing it? Strike one.

BTW, I mean no disrespect, but I just re-read your post and juding by the amount of "!"'s in your post, I'd say you have it worse than I do in terms of keeping things in control, holy moses, look at the rage running through that post, I'm not sure which one of us would pump the most lead into the kid, you or me.
I'm sorry, but don't assume I've ever put someone's life in danger that way just because YOU've confessed to doing so "many times at that age", because I haven't. Spare the rod, spoil the child, if my kid did something like that and no one shot him, I'd whip him good with my kryptonite chain if it weren't for social services. If they think throwing eggs at cars is fun, wait till they get drivers licenses and they think getting drunk and running cyclists off the roads are fun, then we'll see.
BTW: in my post that you referenced, no one was injured in the shoot out while I was being towed behind the truck at 60mph, we all made it to the picnic ok, I bought the girls ice cream.

Bob Gabele 08-07-05 09:02 PM

Slvoid:

I'm glad my exxagerative efforts caused you to take note of my earlier comments. I hope that it were those comments, and not my insensitive word choice, that grabbed your attention.

Responding to your last post however, I don't think that "rage" would be an appropriate interpretation of my earlier comments..."shock" maybe.

My kids are younger (3 and 10)...I'm not, at 54. From what I understand, you are in the battle with kids of the age that I am trying to prepare myself to be able to handle. Clearly, I have lots to learn in the coming years. I wish you well in your efforts.

Having said that, I've watched lots of kids grow up...and in many cities, albeit not NYC. I become frustrated at the increasingly relative disregard for negotiation in exchange for knee-jerk justice reactions that seem to have so much permeated society in our country of late.

We're talking cycling here, not survival. Possilby you are speaking otherwise and, if so, I missed it. Justifying things such as shooting in rage, when clearly not in defense (or even the premature suspicition of such) clearly, and I can only hope, represents a roadblock to the thinking for many minds far more progressive than mine.

P.S. Do you mean to tell us that, in your youth, you've never, ever, water-ballooned or egged a truck or car?

slvoid 08-07-05 09:17 PM

Yes.. I was a freaking computer geek as a kid. Well in grade school, we used to cut class, buy fireworks but we set em off on the roof of my friend's building, we didn't hurl them at people or cars. In jr. high school, we were building firebombs out of ground up match heads and empty medicine pill cases but we launched those from a sling shot into the empty bay of the hudson river behind my friend's apt. building from the roof which used to be a warehouse. We also did the same thing into the fountain in the back of my friend's apartment building from his apartment on park avenue (we almost got kicked out). But no, we never put anyone's life other than possibly our own in danger. And since I've had it happen to me, I simply can't stand anyone putting my life in danger either, whether I'm on my bike or driving.

Ask anyone who's been biking down the road at 20+ mph only to have a car brush by them at 50mph or have someone throw something at them and you let them tell you it's not about survival.
