In Texas, the law says that if you catch someone in the act of stealing your property, kill them. Every month or so, the Houston paper will have a story about some 12 year old kid who is stealing a hubcap. The owner of the car comes out of the house, and puts a bullet into the kid's head. Perfectly legal.
The rules in "civilized" portions of Planet Earth may differ substantially from the rules in Texas.

Being an Ex-Theif
Being I, as an ex-thief, I was constantly prepared for someone to snipe me from their bedroom , or, a better way to put it, the worst case scenario
So you got a bike and say this bike is a mack daddy, or a junker w/e and say you wanna protect it..well there are several ways to do this an im gonna TRY to enlighten you on a few ways you can prevent your bike from being owned.
1) Park your bike in a well lit area, this sounds practical but it works. Security lights around the area where a bike will be parked is great. A thief is somewhat like lightning it most often takes the path of least resistance. If a bike is lit up like a candle this blows his ability to be sneaky and sneaky is good.
2) Get a bike alarm. The louder the better too. Noise and light distract a would be thief and lots of noise makes it impossible to think clearly and this can cause havok in the thiefs mind. If he/she cannot think clearly because of the alarm going off they are more likely to abandon ship and take off.
3) Chain your ****ing bike. I mean my god if you wanna protect what you have worked hard for then start out by taking the simplest of steps to prevent any mishaps. Believe it or not most of my scores come from walking by a bike an simply trying to pick it up, and you would be surprised at just how many people leave their bikes loose
4) This one is for those people that run impound lots. DOGS! MEAN !! DOGS !!....i tell you what there is no feeling worse than jumping a fence to realize your now standing in the presence of a mean ass dog. Ive made many dashes from dogs and im sure others have to. This is one of the number one things you can do to protect your impound lots. Fence it in and turn loose a couple of vicious animals on the inside.
5) Buy quality bike chains, specialty locks, unusual locks.
Your common thief is usually at work at night. . Take away their ability to be quick by properly securing your goods.
Always have motion sensor lights, I never stayed around to see if someone was coming when a motion sensor light went off while i was in a garage checking a sexy bike out, they were my worst fear.
If you can take away all the thiefs advantages then he/she is far less likely to make your bike another statistic.

Stealing bikes still very well exists, I do not beleive it is ever outdated to warn people and help prevent theft. And, as for having 3 years of criminology/criminal justice under my belt, I am very familiar with the statue of limitations

Something else to consider: professional bike thieves usually work in pairs. Are you up to fighting two people at once? Professional thieves are also very willing to use weapons - at the least, expect a screw driver to be used as a stabbing weapon and a bolt cutter as a club. Including by the guy's partner when he arrives behind you when you're struggling with him on the floor.
That's not to say do nothing. Just act appropriately and intelligently, taking into account all the relevant factors - and don't blame someone for alerting you to what these are.

I've been to jail once for assault and battery, but, Ive almost been caught a few times, Ive had plenty of people see me in their sheds and garages, but I would come up with a snappy excuse, aka Im looking for my dog, ive had a guy threaten to shoot me if I run after he caught me in his truck, but I ran , never got shot.
I've always been a picky theif, I grabbed my hands on a sick schwinn one time, sold for 700 bucks at walmart within 30 minutes of having it.
I dont steal kids bikes and crap, useless to me, seeing as I live in a redneck neighbor hood, not used to theives , the majority of people around me are 70+, Ive cranked a car up in the middle of their driveway, shined the headlights in their bedroom window, never got caught.
I stole a porsche boxer one time, my prize winner.
Good times.
I had a bow and arrow shot at me one time (lawl) forgot about that.

I would beat the crap outa him, throw him to the road next to the garbage can with a warning if he ever shows his slimmy face around my place again he gets another whoopin. Then go inside, if cops arive I have not seen this gentle soul in my life and its a crying shame what someone did to his face officer :-) Of coarse Im from Louisiana hahaha we do things a little different, my next suggestion would be to give him a ride to the swamps and let the gators eat him alive!
Now this would be examples of what I would do if he stole my kids bikes from out side, if he stole mine he would be on ice waiting to get puddy filled in his forhead from the 45 cal. hole because I keep my bike inside.
