Thin white line
I like having a white line painted on the side of the road.
It shows me where to ride to avoid glass.

I was thinking this morning on the ride in to work, that Mondays are "three days worth of broken booze bottles to ride through!" I generally have to ride 2-3 feet to the left of the line to avoid the glass! ... but you are right, the white line is THE point of reference!

Sadly, most of my route doesn't have that line; but the Slime liners and kevlar-belted tires seem to do the job.
