Recharger and Batteries
For those who use blinkies with AA or AAA batteries and are interested in a renerable solution, here is a review of a product that may solve the problem of thow away batteries.
I recently started using a universal charger and 12 rechargeable batteries from batteryspace.com (CH-P1000 Smart Charger+12 AA 2300mAh Powerizer NiMH Cells w. Car-plug).
About the Batteries
Powerizer (TM) Ultra high 2300mAh capacity means ultra long working power.
Excellent performance in Digital Cameras, CD Players, Remote Control Vehicles, Metal Detectors, Flashlights, PDA’s etc..
Designed to enable rapid charging and long cycle life. Last up to twice than ordinary NiCd battery and 4 times longer than Alkaline Batteries. Can be recharged for up to 1000 times! Memory free operation provides great convenience. Can be used as an exact replacement for standard AA size batteries in most equipment.
About the Charger:
Can be used with 110V AC household voltage or with the included 12V DC Car lighter plug, you can charge battery in any place, in the house or from the car.
Negative Delta V automatic Cut off feature---ensures battery to be fully charged and protected.
Will charge 2 or 4 AA or AAA Ni-Cd or Ni-MH batteries in 2-3 hours.
Built in "intelligent" microprocessor controlled charging, identifies defective cells and a safety timer for complete overcharge protection. It is a real smart charger.
Red LED indicates charging, green LED indicates charging completed or the charger is in "trickle charge" mode.
Will charge any of NiMH or NiCd AAA or AA rechargeable batteries
I am happy with how the item was packaged and how it functions. I had no problems whatsoever with the delivery. My package was delivered the day prior to that was indicated in the email telling me to expect my shipment. The prices are very good and this purchase will, inevitably, save me time and money in the future.
The charger is very easy to use. Just put the batteries in the charger and leave them alone until they are ready for use. The light should be green before putting any batteries in showing you that the charger is connected to power. Then the light indicator on the outside of the charging unit will let you know that the batteries need to be charged. The indicator is red while the batteries are charging, and then turns green when the batteries are fully charged. It also conveniently lets you know if the batteries are not in right, charging improperly, or there is something wrong with them. If any of these things happens, the light indicator will turn red and then immediately turn off.
The battery charger itself has a cheap feel to it, but it is light and small, and can be stored just about anywhere, like a car glove box.
One warning: the batteries do get a slight bit hot while charging. They do not get dangerously hot, but just be aware.
There is one other thing I want to point out with this product. It is not necessarily a negative feature, but one that could be considered annoying by some. The batteries need to be charged in pairs. This means that if you have something that requires three batteries to operate, when the batteries die and you need to charge them you are going to have to find a fourth battery that needs charging at the same time. Or, you could replace the dead battery with a new/charged one and just charge two of the three dead batteries. It would be nice if a universal charger could be created that allows the consumer to charge as few or as many batteries at one time as they want. This would be very helpful, considering that not all battery operated items require an even number of batteries to become functional.

I've also been very happy with BatterySpace products.
If you're looking for a slightly higher-end charger, check out the MAHA MH-C401 from thomas-distributing.com. I previously had a MAHA 204 which charges in pairs. It's so much nicer to have a charger which monitors each cell individually, especially when you have devices which use an odd number of cells.
Also the 401 has a fast/slow charge switch. And even in fast charge mode, it doesn't get the batteries all that hot. I think it might monitor battery temp.
