NC new tag for bikers!
Well NC has finally stepped up to acknowledge there are lots of riders out there. They are taking orders for personalized tags for bikers with portion of proceeds going to assist bike related issues in the state. One step closer towards progress.........we'll take it in baby steps!

NC still needs only 5 applications for the 300 required.

However, what message would be sent to the bureaucrats at NCDOT if the state could not get a mere 300 applications for this tag?

"Freedom of movement is the very essence of our free society...once the right to travel is curtailed, all other rights suffer." --Former Justice William Douglas, U.S. Supreme Court

I saw at my LBS they had the applications on the counter where you check out. I thought that was a great way to get the message out.

I'm just curious what Supreme Court case established the right to travel.

- I'll start designing some stickers with alternative messages. Have any other good phrases in mind?

The right to travel has long been recognized by the courts as inherent in our constitutional concepts of personal liberty...Because that right is fundamental, the [U.S. Supreme] Court reasoned, "any classification which serves to penalize the exercise of that right, unless shown to be necessary to promote a compelling government interest, is unconstitutional."

We nevertheless place our faith in them, and against restraint, knowing that the risk of abusing liberty so as to give rise to punishable conduct is part of the price we pay for this free society. Freedom of movement is kin to the right of assembly and to the right of association.… This freedom of movement is the very essence of our free society, setting us apart. Like the right of assembly and the right of association, it often makes all other rights meaningful….Once the right to travel is curtailed, all other rights suffer, just as when curfew or home detention is placed on a person.

- Bicycling each day helps keep the air pollution away
- Help reduce traffic jams; be nice to bicyclists
- Even when my vehicle is slower, my right to travel is the same
