Bicyclist shot with an arrow is recovering

TEMPE - A man was recovering Tuesday after being shot with an arrow as he was riding his bicycle this weekend.

The man, 38, was riding his bike at 10:11 p.m. Saturday eastbound in the 1000 block of West Broadway Road when he was hit with a "bolt" arrow in the forearm, police said. It was likely fired from a small crossbow, they said.

A random hit to someone by an arrow is uncommon but can be fatal, said Sgt. Dan Masters, a police spokesman.

Police said they weren't sure if the suspect or suspects were in a moving car or across the street when the shot was fired.

The victim was taken to Maricopa Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

I for one think that a special bike lane in areas deemed "hazardous projectile domains" is required and that there should be a dedicated bicycle detour around the firing zones. Time and time again have I seen bicyclists hit with crossbow bolts and projectiles fired from trebuchets. We need bow and trebuchet-free bicycle zones. I know 6 guys who've been shot with arrows, bolts, rocks, or pies. They are all living testimonials to the virtues of special bike detours around test firing ranges. I once lost a bike to a 800 lb boulder fired from a local man named Edward Longshank's trebuchet. The bike is gone and I will never have it back due to trebuchet-rock damage. People who disagree are ignorant and need to learn that I am the new master cyclist of the universe who knows all there is about avoiding crossbow, catapult, and trebuchet damages.

Riding VC would have prevented this :p

Yes it would have.

Very Circuitiously around the firing zone.

Try and explain that one to the Wife.

"I honey how was your ride home today"?

"Oh it was great until I got shot with an arrow"

huhenio 05-12-06 02:23 PM

Firearms are more aero than bows and arrows; act accordingly

DataJunkie 05-12-06 02:30 PM

Would anyone be offended if I mounted a crossbow to my bike? Now that a cyclist has been shot with an arrow and all....
We might take to hating all crossbows as a form of coping with the trauma :p

Extort 05-12-06 04:07 PM

only offended if you do not include a picture once the project is completed... good hunting!

Few years back some guy was going around offing homeless people in Chicago with a crossbow. I thin he nailed a cyclist also before he was caught.

once in boston, around feb 1994, on the side of the outer beltway (I-?) a couple drivers got in a high-beaming / tailgating match, both pulled over to side of road to duke it out, one dude opened his trunk and shot the other with a crossbow. i believe it was a fatal injury.

I can imagine the kind of punks that would do something like this - grew up in a neighborhood with a lot of worthless punks who pulled this kind of crap.

I've always thought that a wrist crossbow would be nice for trying to take out the tires of cars that cut you off or whatever...

^^^^ If this is a serious post, Im sorry...

However, I cant get over the humor of "I once lost a bike to a 800 lb boulder fired from a local man named Edward Longshank's trebuchet" LOL! Who the hell does this happen to? I want that to happen to me, just for the story! LOLOLOLOL!

Better yet, use Robert Deniro's Taxi Driver wrist rigged .25 Auto.

Back in the 1980s I was crewing for a woman training for RAAM. As we approached a certain corner on a backroad leading to Cajon Pass I radioed to her, "Watch out around this corner for motorcycles flying across the road." She laughed. Around the corner a large machine did go over the road some 10 feet in the air, 20 feet in front of her. "I thought you were kidding" she said. "It is a dedicated state area for dirt riding and I've seen it before" I told her.

A few days ago I came out of our 3rd floor apartment and found a baggie of buckshot on our doorstep, i took it to the apt manager and she said the night before at about 3 am they received reports of 2 14 yr old kids with slingshots shooting buckshot at cars. there's a 4 lane 45mph main road right in front of our apartment, and our 3rd floor would give you a good vantage point. i asked if she needed to give the buckshot to the police for a case but she said no the kids were minors so the cops just took them home.

haha hate to burst the bubble, but no- it's all fake. Except Edward Lonshanks is real, but he's been dead for several centuries now. I just couldn't resist the "no need to debate" call in the initial post to make a mockery of the classic forum fodder that sometimes appears. I'm surprised that some people actually make serious posts akin to this crap!

Ahem but in all seriousness, trebuchet and catapult attacks on bicyclists are on the rise. In 1997 there were 0, in 2004 there was 1... hehe

Lucky for me, the jackasses I see on my commute can only afford rocks, batteries, and insults to hurl at me as I ride past....

Makes me glad that the truck passenger who shot me last Friday only had a pellet gun, and just grazed me.

Mmm the recent hunting incident involving Cheney originated in a mal-adjusted headset and some bad vision. Just another reason ALL CYCLISTS must make sure their bicycles are in proper adjustment (even the headset). You don't want to aim at a Quail and hit a wealthy attorney.

How is this funny?

古強者死神 05-18-06 01:32 AM

Probably the #1 reason I will only bike on trails and my nehborhood. Too many punks out there looking to have fun at sombody esles expense.

I was biking to work one day as a kid and sombody thru a baseball at me going close to 80-100mph and to this day I have an injury from it where it almost shattered my xiphode process (where your 2 rib cages connect) it knocked my off my bike and I couldnt breath for like 2 mintues and was sore for weeks.

I dont road rage, but even latley driving on the road has been so bad I just want to have like those big marbles (crushers we called them as kids) to check thru sombodies windshield to teach them a lession about running stop signs or cutting me off so close that it nearly removes my bumper... but then I would be no better than them... and knowing my luck id be in jail/prison.
