i am in an MS Degree program for Psychiatric Rehabilitation (PSYR). one of the pillars of this care provider movement is practitioner wording for "patients, clients, consumers, customers" label. the correct name to refer to "consumers" makes it more personal; to identify the "schizo" instead as a "Person with schizophrenia" takes away some of the labeling and helps identify your relation as person to person.

to classify people deflates from their humanity (invites "pre-judgement").

there are people who drive their bikes (with the Law backing them), and there are others who unfortunately ride under their own make believe rules. there also are people who drive (car, truck, motorcycle) in harmony with others each following the Law. sometimes it seems that there are some people who have forgotten the Laws of the Road and have made up their own rules as well.

in my book, these are drivers in a cage (cagers) as are the "wrong way" bicyclist are the only true recipients for "get off the road!" remarks.

here in s nj, being with the law is the only way to go!

I hate those people in the grocery store that push their carts like they own the isle. They have no consideration for anyone else, especially when they are talking on their cell phones. What do I call them?

I agree with the OP. They are people who drive cars for whatever reason. Most of them are nice. Most of them are considerate. Some of them are idiots. It shouldn't be us vs. them. It should be us working together to share the road and accomplish the things we all set out to do.

This really should be a sub-forum in car free living.

I hate being called a cager, and if some jackass calls me a cager, I'll let him know about my feelings on the subject by showing how close the truck can get.

It looks like both sides of this debate need to chill and get a sense of humor.

This is a forum for cyclists, so you should expect people here to think that cycling is an all-around better way to travel than driving a car. Sometimes, we'll even poje fund at car drivers. If you can't deal with that, you're in the wrong place. Plus, most of us are cagers some of the time (come on, admit it).

And, as far as insults go, "cagers" is pretty darned mild. If it annoys you, your offense-meter is way, way, to sensitive.

You would endanger somebody's life because you didn't like the (relatively innocent too) name he called you? You're definitely a cager. (And some of this earlier-mentioned maniac stuff is also kinda relevant, it would appear...)

What I want to know is who stole this term from the motorcycling community? We've been refering to stoopid people in cars, not the general car driving population, as 'cagers' since Hector was a pup.

+1 A biker rides a motorcycle, I never feel comfortable with the term applied to bicyclists, even if it is probably technically accurate. Of course I ride my bicycle pretty much as Diane describes her fantasy biker...sans helmet of course, ponytail got cut off over 10 years ago, Harley got sold over 10 years ago to pay Uncle Sam's taxes, never could bring myself to cut the arms off a fine leather jacket...oh damn, maybe I ain't her fantasy biker.

Cager: A basketball player; derived from the days when a wire mesh barrier surrounded the court to protect the fans from the players and vice versa.

1929: It has become common practice to surround the court with a suspended wire basket or cage to keep the ball and players inbound - players often come off after a game with chain-link marks on their skin. Naismith's original rules stated that the first player to get to the out-of-bounds ball gained possession. This had led to mayhem and the first answer was the cage. In 1929 this is abandoned and replaced with the simple side-line throw, although basketball players will still be called "cagers" for many years.

Yup, those of us who wrestle(d) (real wrestling, not the professional acrobatic soap operas on TV) would take offense at being called a cager.

I am not offended. Call people cagers all day long. I just wanted people to think about how overly simplistic their view of drivers is. Those that use the term cager are doing exactly what they hate about cagers. They are viewing vehicles as faceless nameless objects, just as poor inconsiderate drivers do of us cyclists. Just trying to point out the irony...

Calling a cyclist a Cager on a Bike seems to have evoked some strong emotions though. I have to hire someone to read all the death threats!

I'll do it for $5 + $1 for each bad word contained in the threat. For another $20, I'll find two guys with a pickup truck, some dogs and firearms and make sure the threats cease permanently.

Noo, I don't want the threats to stop, I want to find that one original method of demise that I can actually use to put myself out of this kooky world!

That's the strange thing. If I hang around with the Vespa club it's simply a given that car drivers are brain dead. But this BF is like the most apologetic towards drivers, and most bashing towards their fellow cyclists than other two-wheeled vehicle operators out there trying to stay alive out there.

No we are not. At least the enlightened are not. Since the introduction of truly excellent atypical anti-psychotic drugs, it is clear that those with mental illnesses are truly suffering from a disease and not a personality or character flaw.

To label someone a schizophrenic, implies that is WHO they are. It is not. It is just a chronic/terminal disease that requires treatment. Just as someone with lymphoma isn't a lymphonist, but a person with lymphoma.

When a disease takes over your life, we have a tendency to label that person as being that disease, such as diabetics, schizophrenics, manic depressives, and so on.
