Another squirrel bites the dust

I wish they had pictures:

HELSINKI (Reuters) - A squirrel scampered into the bicycle wheel of an unlucky Finnish opera singer, causing him to fall, knock himself out and break his nose just ahead of the world premiere of a new opera.

Esa Ruuttunen was pedalling his way to the Helsinki Opera House last month when the squirrel ran into his spokes.

The singer ended up concussed and in a local hospital, rather than at his rehearsals for the Finnish opera Kaarmeen hetki (Hour of the Serpent), which opens on September 15.

"He is not yet singing in rehearsals, but thinks he will be able to perform at the world premiere," Finnish National Opera spokeswoman Heidi Almi told Reuters.

The squirrel died in the accident

The other day, I saw two squirrels fall (jump?) out of an overhanging tree, right onto the windshield of a minivan going 30mph.

~ Final score ~

Minivan: 2
Squirrels: 0

RIP squirrels... OMG maybe they were pushed!!!!

A very confused squirrel ran up my girlfriend's dad's leg while he was riding. He said he hung there for a moment and then jumped off.

They must not look when they run out into the street or something.

I ran over an opposum last week. They are such stupid creatures. I slowed down when I saw it and it still ran into me from the other side of the road. It went under my back tire and I felt it hit the bottm of my shoe. When I returned to the scene of the crime it was not there.

I had that happen, luckly the squirrel's timming was off, and I just ran him over with the rear tire. That was a good thing, I really don't want to clean guts out of my spokes.

I was pulling a trailer with my 3 year old son in it last weekend and was going about 5 mph. 2 squirrels were chasing each other and both darted between my wheels. The second one hit my foot. My son responded with: Did you see those crazy squirrels?

I hit a snake crossing my lane illegally yesterday on the way home! It was just to the other side of a small bridge, and blended in very well... didn't see it till I was about 2 feet away and there was no time to stop. I really felt bad!

I've had a few close calls with squirrels. There's no way to predict what they'll do once they're in front of you.

The squirrels resent the squirrel lanes, and would prefer that cyclists learn to share the entire road...

They might accept squirrows on every street and MUP.

Eww... Chipmunks have a lot of blood, I'm guessing squirrels do too?

Yuk...

I actually have heard this on the Fredcast. Are there any fredcast listeners here?

Why would you stop? To coax it out of the road. Just kidding.

Just running over a snake with two bike tires probably didn't bother the snake at all. You would normally have to skid on it to do any harm.

A snake is a tiny speed-bump. Squirrels, though, seem to taunt you...I used to live and drive around the backwoods of southern Kentucky, and I've run over a couple snakes...if you don't time it just right, the snake will strike your vehicle.....
To kill.cactus: chimpmunks are squirrels with a designer outfit.....

I've been saying ffffffft to squirrels. Stick your upper teeth against your lower lip and go fffffft; they'll usually scamper. If you've ever heard a squirrel scolding another squirrel or crow or whatever, they say something similar, but screechier. Coming from an animal 200 times its size, I'm guessing that a squirrel doesn't care if the tone isn't just right.
I don't even give them a chance. If they're within attack range, they will be fffffffted. Take that, squirrel!

Squirrows, wow... That is one brilliantly bad pun! I think it's safe to say we have a winner for this thread!

what about squirrel's rights? just because they don't take the proper lane, doesn't make them wrong, does it? Maybe they can't afford lights and twelve-hundred dollar outfits....

Yes, it's a hard choice to make, though.....What would happen if the poison got into the the water supply??? Would the rats rebel, and say the cats caused all this?

Squirrels are evil and annoying. They're tree rats and that's all.

Personally, I waged a jihad on them back in 1994. Down with squirrels.

A personal jihad against squirrels? Interesting life goal. How is it coming? I understand the squirrel population is at an all time high. You have been at this jihad 12 years now.

i had a terrible experience the other day. I was riding down at the racetrack (auto racing, open to cyclists all season) and first I saw some guy with his bike, and thought he had a flat. But when I stopped i saw he'd run over a seagull and the poor thing was still alive and writhing around. I was totally horrified and couldn't watch the poor animal suffering... just then, some of the guy's buddies came by and i took off. By the time I rounded the track again, they were gone and so was the poor bird... i have no idea what they did with it.

I should point out that I'm really sensitive about animals- I've moved turtles and snakes out of the way so they don't get run over by cyclists .I know it makes me sound like a nutjob. ANyways, that day, i continued on and then, i felt something hit the bottom of my right hand shifter, and i looked down, figuring something had popped up from the road. I saw a chipmunk running away! It wasn't dead, but i thought EWwwww! And got off my bike to make sure no chipmunk guts were on it. After that, I said, that's it Im outa here.... this is a bad omen. ALl the way home i kept waiting for more disasters but nothing happened. As it was I kept seeing that poor bird and it gave me the willies all night.

The thing is at that park, there are snakes, turtles, foxes, gophers, birds, chipmunks, otters, skunks, and I had never seen anything happen until that day!
