Guess who didnt wear a helmet

Me, and you want to know what happened? I got a concussion and had to spend 4 days in the hospital. I just got back home and while i was never a strong advocate on either side of the helmet issue, im gonna have to say that im not getting back on a bike without one. I have a strong feeling that i would have been fine if i had worn a helmet.

WEAR THEM PEOPLE.

sadly the people that need to see this message wont be reading in the advocacy and saftey forum

Yikes, I'm glad you're going to be OK.

A friend of mine had a similar experience. He'd ride all around town with no helmet. Then one evening, he left class for home and woke up in the back of an ambulance with a nasty bump on the head. Doesn't remember the crash, doesn't remember getting on his bike (though others saw him get on), doesn't remember arriving at home looking punch-drunk and acting irrationally (though his roommates testify to it). Scary.

I always wear one when riding, but thanks for the dramatic reminder. I'm pleased you are well.

Glad to hear that you're ok and I hope you have a full recovery. Being in the hospital is no fun at all.

I've had a helmet on for my major accidents (I always wear one) and the ER doctor commentend both times that it was good that I had one since they see so many riders in the ER who didn't wear them and the ones without helmets are always in worse shape. ER docs knows the benefits of wearing a helmet first hand.

Guess who didn't wear a helmet either? Me, and you know what happened?

Nothing.

I'm glad you're doing okay. And that's cool that you like helmets now. But I'm not so certain that your newly-found preference should necessarily be everyone else's.

And I don't think I saw him putting a gun to your head and say, "Wear a helmet NOW"

Nothing against hemets,
Just that when I have a serious crash it seem like my chin is what take the hit!
My chin now consists of mostly scar tissue, and all my front teeth are chipped.

Now my cousin once hit me in the head with a baseball bat while hunting Easter eggs
I always wear a helmet when hunting Easter eggs now.

I have my eye out for a little chin helmet

Shoot! I hope nobody thinks I really have my “eye out” looking for a helmet.
I can’t really take my eyes out,
Man I hope I didn’t confuse anyone

All seriousness aside, I make my wife wear a helmet when she rides (I don’t want to be married to some one that looks like me).
And the State requires me to wear one to protect the Road, and Automobiles.

The thing with a helmet is that while you might wear it every day, you will only use it once, and hopefully never.,

glad you're ok and have become "one of the educated"!
i believe Darwin was on to something...
my brief history:
1) tbi (traumatic brain injury) recipiant, 1977 (VW vs Telephone pole)
2) bicycle, domed (with helmet) ever since, (do drive autombiles as well)
3) nothing specific, many tours and club rides...when 22 years later an-
4) Age 85, female "had my signal on" cut me off. i hit her (her fault) and i received spinal injury on landing. Police on site stated with-out helmet, i would have been removed in a different state as helmet (bell image pro) was destroyed.
Always were your helmet!

I'm sorry you had to learn by suffering a concussion & glad you'll recover. At least you're alive to tell what happened & advise others to wear a helmet. Good decision on your part.

You can get a concussion without hitting your head on anything. I didn't wear a helmet when my VW was broadsided by a Prelude...my head contacted nothing, but my brain contacted the inside of my skull. Took me several weeks to recover.

if they prevented death or concussions nobody would ever die from head injuries when wearing a helmet, this isnt the case at all, get a clue sheesh

helmets do nothing more than mitigate some head injuries in the event of a crash, anything over about 15mph whack to your noggin and you will have a concussion even with a helmet, anything over about 20-22mph whack to your noggin with a helmet and you may easily be killed

they do not protect from facial injuries or serious impacts

Car crashes are responsible for more head injuries in this country than any other cause.

Yet, it's illegal to wear a helmet in a car on public roadways.

I read an article on bicycle helmets recently that stated newer designs are built for style more than function. They are made so that the most impact protection is at very top of the helmet. The most vulnerable part of the skull, the temple area, is left open and unprotected and/or made with the least amount of foam.

I've been wearing a helmet for the last 20 years. Ever since I read an article in "Cycling Weekly" that said "imagine your head hitting a car bonnet".

Once a helmet did save me from serious injury. I got clipped by a car door that caused me to go down. What was weird was that I actually landed on my back in the other car lane! If I hadn't of worn a helmet I'm fairly certain that I would have cracked my skull. What was more fortunate was that no cars were coming the other way!

This is a snip from the consumer product safety commision

Every year, thousands of children are treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms for falls from shopping carts. Falls from shopping carts are among the leading causes of head injuries to young children.
https://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/pubs/5075.html

Gunshot wounds are the leading cause of death from head injury.
https://health.yahoo.com/topic/emerge...thwise/hw93422

I hate Statistics and studys, seems like some one has always got an agenda.

My opinion the number one leading cause cause of death is LIFE.

Number two leading cause of death is Doctors. Really, I have read a study that said this.

WOW, that's self-righteous, condescending, AND insensitive! A trifecta!. So much for stopping by the A&S forum...

And I'm even pro-helmet...

I'd be dead on several occasions if I hadn't been wearing a helmet.

If you chose not to, that's okay with me.
