Ride of Silence flag
OK bear with me here...... I like the idea of a yearly Ride Of Silence, or maybe more often but the whole Ride Of Silence idea is a good one. So, how's about coming up with a flag idea, that will come to symbolize the Ride Of Silence?
I'm thinking a black flag with a white bicycle outline, same one see on bike path signs, nice simple, direct design. Kinda like the black POW/MIA flag which did a lot to make that movement recognizable and make it an enduring movement.
I'm thinking keep it seperate from Critical Mass, make it a self-standing Ride Of Silence movement, with a recognizable flag anyone can make, the black flag with white bicycle, and just like the POW/MIA movement work for sympathy and shared feelings with the public rather than alienation.
Just my thoughts, just throwing some ideas out there, putting on my asbestos bike shorts now!

You know, this might be a good idea.
A lot of people ask me about my bright yellow Livestrong bracelet, and I'm glad to tell them what it means (without getting preachy!) and to beware of the fakes.
I would opt for brighter colors, so the design could be incorporated into equipment that could be used for visibility as well as make a statement. It may not, however, have the same somber impact the black and white MIA flags have.
I'll do without the asbestos shorts, thanks!

Many ROS riders already wear cloth armbands on the left bicep during the ride.
Red band for riders that have been hit by a car in the past and Black bands for riders that have not been hit.
Enjoy

Ride of Silence
Here's what we did in Grand Rapids MI for 2006. The bike flag/sticks were borrowed - donated by a local bike shop (and all returned later that evening). We printed the orange funeral style flags with Ride of Silence and attached them to the flag sticks:

Those funeral flags seem like they would get the attention of non-cyclists. Most people know what they mean. Black mourning armbands were used in Portland, but I don't think they were particularly visible.

We had black arm bands for all riders and those of us that have been injured in car/bike accidents also wore a red arm band as well. We rode, I know most of the people we passed had no clue what was going on. I think the funeral flags would be more "understandable" to the non-bicycling community.

Ride of Silence
Hey DeputyJones,
An FYI, though it's not yet listed on the R of S website, the Macatawa Cycling Club in Holland MI has committed to holding a R of S in the Holland area for 2007. So you'll have options of either attending GR's or Holland's.
Check the website, or you can email me around May, and I'll send Ride info, once they forward me their Ride details.

Hey deputyjones,
You also have the option of choosing a Ride of Silence in Spring Lake MI, as a member of the West MI Coast Riders clubs has agreed to organize one there, for the Grand Haven - Muskegon area.
Watch for details on the R of S website.
