Closet Cagers

A close cager is someone who rides a motorcycle, or bicycle, or other type of non-cage vehicle, and also drives a cage.

When a closet-cager is in his cage, he is just a plain old bad driver, mean, hateful to others, inconsiderate, and just all around stupid.

They expect to be respected when in their non-cage, but then they are the ones doing mean things to people when they are in their own cage !

Do you know anyone who is a closet cager ?

galen_52657 10-31-06 10:31 AM

Every time I park at the mall... zillions of them... they will run you down when you try to cross the lot, but once they get out of the car... everybody else better stop for them!

UmneyDurak 10-31-06 10:42 AM

Seek help, your attitude is not really healthy.

Shiznaz 10-31-06 10:46 AM

I'd consider myself mostly a closet canoeist.

LOL, I knew there had to be a reason to come in here.

Mean, hateful, inconsiderate, and rude people are just that, and they are that pretty much all the time regardless of their vehicle of choice.

But what about the folks that are not mean hateful and inconsiderate and rude, but turn into that combination when they climb behind the wheel. I have seen some of the nicest people turn downright dangerous and "competitive" the moment they turn the key.

Brian Sorrell 10-31-06 12:13 PM

These days, when I get behind the wheel, I'm cool as a cucumber, driving under the speed limits, waving at everyone like a complete idiot. Surely, it's all the biking that does it.

Until I hit LA traffic. Then f^<k that! The wife can drive.

Me too. And I think this was what teh OP was talking about, not just anyone who drives, but those who turn into jerks when they get behind the wheel.

But this is not new. In Drivers training over 35 years ago they showed a film (already old) with Goofy as Mister Walker who turned into Mister Wheeler, a Jeckel and Hyde transformation. The film ends with Wheeler honking and yelling at the slow driver in front of him. Well actually it ends when the camera pulls back and we see the car in front is a tow truck, towing his wrecked car.

+10... exactly... I had forgotten all about this. I have seen it.

In my mind that was the role that made Goofy a star.

I am. That's why I drive as little as possible.

timmhaan 10-31-06 01:53 PM

it's called: do as i say, not as i do.

it's a human trait that i cannot stand. it drives me crazy when you see someone complain about something and then they immediately do the exact same thing to someone else.

Kinda like people that call other people names.

You know... I'd always wondered what the term 'cager' meant. I was worried it would be a situation of "if you don't know already then you are one". Thanks to this thread I now know what it means!

Thank you Bike Forums for making my life have meaning! Or at least a term I hadn't already known...

No, probably just a shift in attitude. I've found that when you're on your bike, you look at people like they don't see you, but when you're in your car you notice everyone.

sbhikes 10-31-06 08:12 PM

It's car addiction. Same as alcoholism. You get in a car and suddenly you have a shot of courage. Many people can't handle the power, get drunk on it, aggressive. The first step is to admit you have a problem and your life is unmanageable. Then you'll be more open to accepting a solution.

tomcryar 10-31-06 08:30 PM

It's all about what has power (or control) over you. Do YOU have power over you, or does someone (or something) else?

I know what you're saying, but we're looking at this behavior because of our interest in cycling. I've met people who turned into aggressive bastards when they got in cars, but they also turned into aggressive bastards in other situations. I think that the tie between the behavior and their personal problems is spot on, but that if we followed these people around all day, we would see the same behavior in other situations (bullying business competitors, kicking the dog or family, etc).
