A different thing to advocate for or support.

This thread is NOT a self congratulatory posting about myself or anything like that, please don't get the wrong idea.

I belong to the Masonic Fraternity, Triangle Lodge #643 chartered under the Grand Lodge of Iowa A F & A M. This year I was elected as Junior Warden, or JW, one of the principal officers, at my lodge. as JW I belong to a group called Masters & Wardens. The Masters, Wardens & Secretaries from each of the lodges in my area meet once a month to discuss our lodge events, degree work, fund raisers, charity functions, etc. This way the members of all the lodges know what is going on at others if they want to participate.

One of the things discussed at tonights meeting is a program called Bikes For Books. I had heard about it last year but did not have a chance to find out how to be involved. It was started a few years ago by one of the lodges at only one elementary school & has grown since. One of the principal officers contacts the principals at the schools in the area of town their lodge is in & asks if they want to participate in the program. If they do it is explained how the program works.

The way it works is the students who make significant marked improvement in their reading skills win a bicycle from one of the LBS's here in Sioux City. The teacher decides which of their students have accomplished this goal through out the school year. It is one boy & one girl from certain grade levels for a total of 4 if it is only one school that is being sponsored or 2 if there are 2 schools being sponsored, so a total of 4 bikes are awarded. The Masonic Lodge sponsoring the school purchas the bikes at cost from the LBS & the student is given a voucher to go claim the bike. The vouchers are awarded at the end of the school year in May, just in time for the students to ride outside in the nice weather.

Because I care so much for reading & cycling both I volunteerd my lodge to sponsor 2 schools in the area of town it is located in, with the support of the Senior Warden & Master, of course. I have to contact the principals to see if they are interested. This is the first time Triangle Lodge will do this. We hope it is successful at the schools we sponsor should they decide to do so.

I hope this does 2 things. Helps a student learn more & makes them interested in cycling.

This would be a great idea for any of you to implement in your community. It does not have to be the Masonic Lodges that does this. It can be the any other fraternal organization or local bike club, etc.

I think the first thing to do would be to contact the Superintendant of Schools to see if he or she thinks it is a great idea.

The reason it has been a success in my area is the Superintendant of the Sioux City School District is a Freemason himself, we have his full support.

I think another thing this will help improve or hopefully help improve is child hood obesity.

What do you think? Does it sound like something you could start in your area?

Congratulations on your election to JW.

I mean, it sounds like a good idea and all, but it's awfully subjective. Reading improvement?

I would rather figure out a way to somehow refurbish and donate all the bikes impounded at our city yard back to people that need them.

Thank you.

There is a group that is working on doing that. It was decided to purchase brand new bikes for this program. The teachers decide which students have improved the most. It is not a contest to see who can read the most books in a certain amount of time. Say for example there is a student who read 25 books in 3 months but makes little improvement at comprehending what he or she read. Where a student that reads say only 5 books but has made significant improvment at unerstanding what he or she is reading.

Sorry about that. Wish there was a way to edit the title of the thread. I think others have requested to be able to do so in the past. Ah well, I think ya'll know what I mean.

Sure, I normally don't nitpick about spelling/typos (I am personally terrible/careless about typos), but I loved the resulting word. I also thought it funny to be part of a thread about improving literacy.

Fixed it, also went ahead and corrected the spelling for different (was differant). Fixing the title of a thread is easy, it's just a pm away.

It is a great idea N_C.

As far as determining who is eligible for the reward, let the teachers figure that out. They have reliable means to determine a person's abilities at the start of the year and figure out who has made the largest improvement. That is part of their job.

A community group that cares about the kids is golden. Good stuff. This is the kind of advocacy we need more of.

(as an aside: Tim Hortons, a "local" coffee chain here, awards kids with bikes who do community work. I am not sure how the program works, or how a person qualifies, but it is another example of this kind of thing.)

The teachers are the ones who will decide which students are eligible, etc. The only thing the Blue or Masonic Lodges are doing is purchasing the bikes & asking if the schools want to participate.

Just a thought,

You might also look into seeing if "Head Start" would like to participate. There is truly an area where the lower income kids who are having difficulties reading might be most impacted by a program of this type. Just a thought, and I wish you and the Masons great success with this.
