I'll rarely turn down a cookie.

By the way, if I "learned" anything from this it is that my instincts are pretty well honed for situations like this. Learning VC practices and habitualizing them into honed instincts has paid off.

i think you're fooling yourself with all that club riding you think hones your solo adaptive traffic cycling techniques, dude.

but that's just my take on it.

glad to see you're getting better at adaptive traffic cycling.

Pilots speak of the OODA loop, meaning that when we do things, we Observe a situation, Orient ourselves, Decide on a course of action, then Act. This is what you did, and there is nothing at all instinctive about it. You mentally scrolled through your options and picked one, even if you did it rather quickly. You might do that next time, or you might take too long in the loop (distraction, too many issues to process at once, etc), in which case bad things can happen.

Rather than congratulate yourself on "honing instincts" (which strictly speaking cannot be done), plan on keeping your head in the game next time as well.

Did anyone actually vote for passing on the right, which I imagine was the unstated goal of HH?
I would certainly pass on the left too, but you can't really fault the driver, as most cyclists would pass on the right. There's nothing wrong with everyone slowing down a bit.
