Anyone riding tonight?
It seems to me that riding on Halloween night may not be the safest thing to do. Except for New Years eve, I think Halloween may have the most potential for problems (harrasment, thrown objects etc.). Any thoughts?

Like the man said, I gotta get home. I didn't even think about it.

I had a "Get in the bike lane!" yelled at me tonight on the way home. Nothing else out of the oridinary. The road did not have a bike lane, of course.

Of course, which is why I waved a friendly hello then moved into the left lane to prepare for my left turn. I get a chance to explain that even if there was a bike lane and even if I wasn't turning left, I still couldn't have cycled through the parked car on the side of the road.

Whew! Made it.
The last mile, through suburban streets, I did have to keep and eye peeled for trick or treaters. One group must have gotten excited about all the lights and reflectors: "Hey, look at the guy on the bike!"

If I succumbed to the temptation to speak, I certainly would not give advice which was logically impossible to follow.

I just spent the entire day standing in uncomfortable shoes worn for my costume's sake, dealing with over-excited Grade 1 students ... I basically collapsed when I got home, so no, I will not be riding outside today. The thought did occur to me, however, that I might start thinking about setting up my trainer.

The people who say those things are people whose bosses, or husbands, or wives have been at them all day to get this or that done, and who have been made to feel small and insignificant and demeaned in some way. Or those are the people whose kids haven't listened to a word they've said all day, and they are ready to pull their hair out with frustration.
So they see a cyclist doing something they think the cyclist shouldn't do, and think that this is their chance to exert their authority.
I feel sorry for those people. They've obviously had a very rough day.

I went for a quickie ride. Unfortuantely, my route took me through a city that banned trick o treating. 3 different cops pulled me over to make sure that I was not trick o treating. it sucked. That's the last time I EVER ride through Walton Hills

I rode. It was fun, the kids cute, and the motorists mellow. We even - drank beer - before we got on our bikes. Parents of rugrats actually let them take our candy.
I think this was the best A&S-related costume on the ride.

Great Photos, Donna! There were a lot of costumes last Friday for Critical Mass- my first in a year-
I think the most dangerous night to ride would have been Saturday night, when all the adult halloween parties were. And it was still a pretty nice night to ride, what with the near full moon. I did about 30 miles Saturday night.
Tonight? the kids would have been throwing candy. Tonight, no thrown objects, and I only got one 'f**kwad' from a car travelling in the opposite direction as I took up a narrow lane on a four laner.
But, he was probably a good samaritian concerned about my welfare.

I just rode home from Cambridge to Newton (about 6 miles) with my wife after a Halloween Party. No problems. But Halloween, New Years, Fourth of July, Memorial Day weekend can all be a little dicey for the number of drinkers on the road.

I did my usual 20 mile training ride this evening. A little bit more traffic, but not much. 30 seconds into the ride I got my customary "Get off the $&#!ing road...get on the $&#!ing sidewalk." First time I ever caught up to them (not intentionally) at the stoplight. I just stood there and stared at them with a confident smile. They sat there uncomfortably for the duration of the light and then screamed "WHAT?!". I really didn't have anything to say. I honestly felt that I was a hell of a lot happier than they were...and that was enough.
BTW, I get one honk/yell either by kids just being kids or by a cager with an attitude on every ride since I started last month. Doesn't matter if its a 20 mile ride or a 60 mile ride, I will get one honk/yell. If its the frat boy, "aaahhhh!" they are ignored. If its the "on the sidewalk *$&@@*#*" they get the friendly wave. Sometimes its the over-emphatic wave with complementary facial expression like I've got something wrong going on upstairs.
As for the remaining 19.99 miles, fantastic. With 17 - 22 knot winds and about 5 stoplights, I was able to average 19.7 mph. This is excellent for me.

I rode last night. No troubles except our police dept had their bike patrol out watching the trick or treaters, and they had no lights whatsoever. It was very dark here at 7:30, and here they come down the street, no lights, no reflectors, black uniforms. I almost hit them.

Am about to head out in the end of morning traffic to do my morning ride, and I have to pass about four high schools, and a college. Is not fun.
