What were the cops suppose to do.

And I'd hardly consider Rodney a cyclist, but your thread title was sensationalist none the less.

syn0n 11-29-07 04:35 PM

It's not like they can do much when the cyclist in question is "intoxicated" and "uncooperative".

But in this case, the police doing nothing is a vast improvement for him!

I can just hear the 911 call now:

RK: Would you please send the police, I've been shot!
911: Of course I'll dispatch a unit right now. What's your name and address?
RK: Can I keep my name confidential?
911: I'm afraid not - can I have your name sir?
RK: This is Rodney King.
911: (click)

That's it. On behalf of cyclists everywhere...I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore. I'm gonna riot.

Who's with me? :D

rugerben 11-29-07 05:29 PM

Oh no....my heart bleeds with sympathy. A guy who is intoxicated, and uncooperative gets in a fight and gets a boo-boo (and let's face it, if he can still ride his bike home, it's just a boo-boo. Hell, Cheney shot an old man in the face with birdshot and the guy was fine. Rodney king now got hit with the same stuff. BFD).
Not only that but this quote kinda struck me:

King rode his bicycle home after the incident and it was not immediately clear who fired the shot, Lewis said.
If it's unclear who shot first, it means King had a gun on him as well. So not only is he intoxicated and uncooperative, he's armed as well.
Pardon me if I'm not exactly moved to rally in his support.

Allister 11-29-07 05:32 PM

He probably should've been riding further left.

Um, read it again. It says nothing about anyone 'shooting first', just 'unclear who fired the shot'.

rugerben 11-29-07 05:41 PM

whoops. your right. my bad, I was busy and distracted and misread it.

Point still stands though. Still a known junkie being an ass-hole.

Fissile 11-29-07 05:46 PM

Rodney is not really a cyclist. The only reason he's on a bike, is because he's a chronic DUI.

Allister 11-29-07 05:56 PM

With the $3.8 million he apparently won, he must have a nice bike. That's pretty real.

I'm not entirely sure we should be condoning shooting anyone in the face, even with birdshot, Rodney King included. Nothing in the article indicated that the shooter knew who it was on the bike, nor any description of the circumstances of the shooting. It could've been any one of us for all we know. You can be damn sure I'd be calling the police if it happened to me (although, admittedly I'd try and be co-operative). But don't let that get in the way of your prejudices.

Lycra. :p

P.S.-Once again, wanted to apologize for misreading and assuming he was armed. My bad.

Mos6502 11-29-07 06:27 PM

He was on a bicycle, so technically that makes him a cyclist. However, certain weight must be given to who you are and what you do - for instance, George W. here might be on a bicycle:

But he's a "president" not a cyclist.

I'd say for purposes of BF discussions about "We cyclists" and "Us cyclists" a cyclist usually refers to a white college grad (or college student) in a white collar job who is a cycling enthusiast, typically a member of a cycling club made of similar comrades. Of course there are exceptions but don't appear to be many.

If you are on a bike because of a court order, you're not a real cyclist.

Brian Ratliff 11-29-07 07:28 PM

So you are a fake cyclist or something?! What does that even mean?

Means you are a DUI, or deadbeat dad, or some such thing, and the local po-po know it, and that's the only reason you're on a bike.

I don't think any court will ever require anyone to ride a bike. They only stop them from driving a car. If they take to using a bike, that only shows an ability to find a reasonable alternative to driving, and is much more preferable than them flouting the court order, and driving anyway, which happens disturbingly often. They may even keep cycling when they get their license back. It's all good.

I'm not trying to start an argument, but calling ol' Rodney a cyclist is a stretch. The only reason Rodney is on a bike is because he smashed 3 Escalades into utility poles in less than a month, and the judge told him he was going to throw his ass in jail if he did it one more time. Otherwise Rodney would be riding in his Escalade.

The term Real Cyclist is used by self appointed spokesmen for "us" or "we cyclists" in several of the BF Lists to disparage those who are not Real Cyclists i.e. white middle class cycling enthusiasts.

A cyclist is anyone riding a bicycle, for whatever reason. No other qualifications required, despite the elitist blatherings of people on this forum.

It's interesting how white people from lily white states, like Iowa, have such terrible hang-ups about race.

This is the last I'm going to post on this thread. Why don't you all go down to the touring section and see my Hennessy Hammock pictures?

I guess it depends on why you're not interested. It's not the action, it's the reason for the action that defines you. Apparently.
