Which US Presidential candidate is best for cycling?
 

Of the candidates running for the US Presidency this year, which candidate do you think would be the best for cycling and why? Note: "best" for cycling does not have to mean will build the most bike lanes and facilities.

Bush - Continue to ensure the upward spiral of oil and the eventual destruction of our economy, at which point we'll be existing in a Road Warrior scenario, be it on bikes.

Hillary - Responsible for an overly complicated health care system which will provide for the care of those weekend warriors and brakeless fixie riders.

Ron Paul - Because Pee-wee Herman isn't available.

I vote socialist so none of the above applies to me, but just
something to think about....Huckabees speeches here in FL.

In my heart and mind, I am an independent, but I always register with a major party to avoid being disenfranchised in the primaries.

For road cyclists, McCain is the obvious best choice among the Republican candidates, but I strongly fear that no one running for office is that committed to our cause, because they all share Forester's attitude that trivializes transportation cycling.

Well, now that my preferred candidate has dropped out of the race, I've got it narrowed down to two candidates.

But that still doesn't tell me who would be best for cycling.

I didn't vote. But I will vote to put this into the P&R category. (just don't think it has much to do with safety, or advocacy.)

Where is the "None of the Above" choice?

This blog talks about specific associations between the presidential candidates and cycling. It's interesting, but I don't get the feeling that any of them have cycling high on their agendas.

Good old "None of The Above". Seriously if you mark the blank line choice in California and write in a name it is ignored in tallying unless that name is registered. I'm gonna see if registering is free. If yes, I'll write in my name then at least one candidate will be supporting BF and cycling. If someone else out there had done this in CA or any other state let us know so we have the option of voting for someone besides "None of the Above".

His mention about giving MPO's more authority is very welcome; this is one of the major strategies we need to see realized to cut through some bureaucratic red tape to get more projects actually implemented.

Looks like Mike doesn't ride a bike much (balance, bowed legs, bad steering) but maybe wearing a sweater and riding a bike makes him look like a "man of the people"?

The only guy who writes a 600 page book on how to use bicycles in traffic effectively, and the only one to write a book about bicycling transportation for traffic engineers, trivializes transportation cycling???

In California we use something like punch cards. For every set of candidates there is a blank line to write a name in and a little box to mark or punch out so the machine will note it. If you mark there without writing in a name it counts as none of the above. I've used it a few times.

None of them. The president is too far removed to really do anything that will help your daily bike ride. You'll have better luck with local and state officials that way. Maybe.

But if you asked Obama about it, he'd promise that as president all bike riders will be living in a golden future of hope and peace, where all their rights will be respected, and motorists will be imprisoned if they are so much as rude to cyclists...just don't pester him for petty details like exactly how and when this will actually happen.

If you ask Hillary, she'll nod and make grave statements about how she supports more federal support for the rights of cyclists 100%. But she won't be able to stay long because she has a meeting with the Roads Should Be For Cars Only lobby in 15 minutes where she willl, of course, agree with them 100% too. A vote is a vote, after all.

McCain will listen patiently to your concerns, then vow to cut off all federal funding for Amtrak, bike lanes and public transportation and use the surplus money to lower taxes so that all those people he sees out there riding bikes will be able to afford a decent car, thus solving all their cycling problems.
