MI Bike Law Card

I've seen numerous other people post about having 'Bike Law Cards' that they carry with them explaining the rights of cyclists on the road. I've searched for one for Michigan, but I'll be darned if I could find any.
So, working off the card made by the League of Illinois Bicyclists, I scribbled one up.

It's basic and straightforward. I'm hoping it prints out on card stock about index card size (which I can fold up and put in a pocket easily) but I'll try that when I get home.

Thoughts/Suggestions?

PS Yes, it shows up as three pages for two sides, with the third page being blank. I told it to stop doing that and it refuses to listen to me, so I'll just print pages 1-2.....
PPS If you want to use it, modify it, etc, feel free.
Edit PPPS The intent of these cards are more for a cyclist, not so much a driver. I'll do that on another project later.

Well what do you want to do with those cards? If the intent is to give them to clueless motorists, then some of the stuff can be omitted. Keep it simple, and to the point. Try to view it from a point of view of a motorist and not a cyclist. "What is cyclist allowed to do while on the road?", so the sidewalk part can be omitted. It is useful to know as a cyclist, but as a motorist somewhat irrelevant. As for hand signals. Might re-phrase it from what cyclist must do, to what the signals are so motorists are not wondering what a heck is going on when this crazy cyclist is waving his hands around.

Sorry, I should have made that more clear in my first point The intent of this card is mostly for the cyclist him/herself. Around here for every cyclist I meet who rides with traffic I find another 5 who ride against, or on the sidewalk, or don't know signals. It's more for the bikers, so they know their rights. Figured, knowing you have the same rights, how to signal, parking the bike, etc were good starting points.

When I get more time this week I want to make a car that is more geared towards handing out to non cyclists, addressing the other points you make there. I just need to write up a sort of outline before I start on it.

I think you need to correct the second page to say 1/2 hour before sunrise, not sunset.

Around here (southern California), many cyclists carry bicycle law summaries to help educate clueless law enforcement officers regarding our rights on the road.

I was thinking that was the purpose but does it really do anything more than make them angry?

Good idea, if only to show how stupid our Michigan laws are.

Mr. H, Thank you. I have wondered if there is something that is available at the S.O.S., but just haven't taken the time to check.

Where is MId-Mi.?

You also need to make a correction to the exceptions to riding close to the right ...unsafe or reasonable unusable to bicycles...
An individual lawfully operating a bicycle upon a sidewalk - dont your regulations have anything to say about when it is legal to ride on the sidewalk. In Quebec it is legal if the wheels are not more than 20 inch dia.

Lights

In Ohio the law was changed to sunset to sunrise for lights. Ours used to be a half hour after sunset to a half hour before sunrise. Several states changed at the same time, but there is a lot of old literature out there. I light em up anytime it starts getting dim. Ironically I was almost hit head on by a bike with no lights one night in the rain. I had mine on.

If I had some of these for NYS laws - as a handy card like this - they would be/have been one of the biggest take aways from my booths for my clubs for the last couple of years. I had more and more - especially women who seemed drawn to me as a woman year round cyclist who is out and does deal with it all - -- people asking me about this type of stuff.

Not what the legal parts are, not how I can take someone to court because of an if or that --- but what are my rights as a bicyclist and how can I best make my ride safe and still be fun.

And personally - they're on their own for that one - all I can give them is knowledge and some history and yet still ensue some want to get out there and go.

Sorry - I tend to rant. but I like the card. Actually at many of my set-ups I had a copy of NYS laws concerning bicycles as a hand out - and I gave out many of them!

I'm glad folks are finding it useful For the record I updated the card again today to fix a few spelling errors (including the one SpaceNerd told me about a month ago and I completely forgot about. Oops).
