Bicyclist killed, cops looking for suspect

(Last updated: April 13, 2008 1:45 PM)

An unidentified 48-year-old was found dead beside his Schwinn bicycle Saturday night in Arcadia and officers are looking for a suspect that hit him, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

There were no eyewitnesses to the crash, FHP reports, when troopers found the victim that appeared to be killed with head injuries at about 8:45 p.m.

The bicycle driver was found next to his bicycle in the north lane of State Road 35 south of Northeast Tennessee Street. FHP doesn’t know what type of vehicle hit the bicycle. The victim was taken to the District 12 Medical Examiner’s Office in Sarasota for a post mortem examination. His identification will be released when his next of kin is notified, FHP said.

Anyone with any information on this crash is asked to contact FHP in Arcadia at 863-993-4618 ext. 264 or 239-938-1800.

wow. that's sad. Sad and just sick that someone would hit and run. Who knows? This guy may have had his life saved if the driver hadn't fled the scene.

It take a truly screwed up person to leave anyone injured beside the road unaided. I hope they find and prosecute the person. Not because it was a bicycle rider, but because it was human being.

It is happening with depressing regularity. In a 5 county area in NC there were at least 4 or 5 hit and runs in the past week, several involving children. In a couple of cases they have yet to find the driver. Personally I think licenses and vehicles are too easy to get in the US. Driver's education is a joke, as is the enforcement of too many laws related to vehicle registration, insurance and lack of proper driver licenses/training. The carnage will continue as long as we allow it.

Webshots is bailing out, if you find any of my posts with corrupt picture files and want to see them corrected please let me know. :(
