Huntsville, AL: Another Tragedy
Sarah was the girlfriend of some long-time friend's son. She was a strong cycling advocate and year-round cycling commuter... This is just gut-wrenching and the 'story' of the motorist sounds all too familiar.

An Athens High School graduate was killed Monday while riding a bicycle on Technology Drive in Huntsville’s Research Park.

Sarah Katherine Chapman, 20, was attending the University of Alabama in Huntsville after graduating from Athens High in 2006.

Sgt. Mark Roberts with the Huntsville Police Department said she was struck by an SUV at about 10:30 a.m. while riding her bike. She was taken to Huntsville Hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Limestone Chapel Funeral Home will handle funeral arrangements.

Chapman was active in many clubs and activities at Athens High, such as the Sub Deb service organization, a family friend said.

AHS Principal Chris Bolen said he had been notified of Chapman’s death.

“It’s just a terrible tragedy,” he said Monday afternoon. “We’ve lost a fine person and a wonderful student. She had a great personality and was just a great kid to have in our school.”

According to Roberts, Chapman’s bike reportedly swerved and the driver of the SUV was unable to avoid hitting her. No charges are expected to be filed against the driver, Roberts said.

What bullsh!t. Swerved my ass. I could run down a dozen cyclists and as long as I claim they all swerved together into the path of my Sports Utility Combine, I'd walk without so much as a speeding ticket.

A tragic story - and I hope to never be the star of that show.

1. I do my best to never let cars overtake me.

2. I run all of the stop signs and red lights (see #1).

3. I use a rear-view mirror (helmet mounted).

3. If you ride in the gutter - and they hit you - it's always because you (the cyclist) swerved.

Sounds like she was doing everything "right", and now she's dead right. No thanks.

Huntsville has more than its share of phone talkers in HUGE SUVS ... you either ride in the rain gutter, or on the side with no shoulder/large drop off due to 14 layers of asphalt. No Bike infrastructure. There are a few Bike/Walk paths but they will not get you anywhere you need to be. I would love to cycle to work but fear I would last a week or less on the roads I would have to travel.

I know this is an old thread, but I need to bump it.

Does anyone know if the bike is still there? I am in Huntsville and I have not seen it.
