So I Kicked in a Headlight...

I was riding through the street commuting to school, and a car of teenagers swerved and intentionally tried to hit me. They did not know that I can pursue them in a 25 mph zone and caught up with them at the stop light. I told them that I can have them arrested for reckless driving with intent to injure/kill, and they laughed in my face. I wrote down the plate number, but I thought it was more worthwhile just to put my heel into his headlight. I took the turn, he waited at the light, and I never saw them again. Needless to say I felt a lot better.

Freakin' kids.

Well, I guess I'll be the first to offer an opinion...

Can't say I feel too bad about them getting their headlight kicked out, and I totally understand your frustration. But once the headlight's kicked out, I'd be hesitant to go to the police with the plate number. They might file a counter-complaint.

However, since you weren't actually hit it might be hard to prove anything against these kids anyway, so a little vigilante justice might be the best option in this instance.

Agree that the headlight is probably the closest thing to a pentalty they would have gotten.

Weren't you worried though that once pissed off they might try to run you over more seriously?
Were you on or off the bike when kicking? I'm not good about hopping on fast and speeding off myself...

Good call on both counts, but with regards to the first one, flaring tempers are known get in the way of sober, rational thought.

NEVER retaliate against people who are trying to kill you. It only makes them try to kill you again.

First of all when you caught up to their car you should have said something like "Hi kids. Thanks for not killing me!"

Then offer them 10 bucks if they promise not to try to kill you again.

NEVER make them mad. They will just try to kill you more often.

What would you have done if someone had kicked in your headlight? Would you have just driven away as they did? You can guess where I'm placing my bet, and I'm sure you're right.
Your word against them and their broken property doesn't balance out well.

Not saying it's impossible, but a headlight is pretty dang hard to break.

"I kicked a big honkin' dent in a quarter-panel." Would be much easier to believe.

They must be really bad drivers if they missed. Good thing for you these kids hadn't taken any driving courses yet.

Thank you for lowering the bar for cyclists world wide. Your childish antics only serve to re-enforce the negative stereotype motorists have.

Take a bow, ass-clown.

Reading this again I realize that you didn't actually put your heel thru the headlight, but only thought about it. Good call, you could have ended up with some severe cuts around your ankle.

I think these two are appropriate here:

“I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.”
Mahatma Gandhi

“If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn't sit for a month.”
Theodore Roosevelt

I have yet to see anyone kick a headlight, but I have seen someone smash a side-view mirror completely off of a van!

Good on ya for teaching them a lesson!

I'm quite pleased I don't have such encounters with kids, luckily I always have a water bottle with me and I can treat them like an annoying dog who just won't stop chasing me/getting too close and I fear it'll get stuck in my spokes

Yeah...and make sure you don't call the offending drivers names (like ass-clown)...save the name calling for other cyclists on an internet forum. They won't be able to hurt you.
