What is the passing distance in Illinois?

I was passed today by inches by some geezer who admitted he did it on purpose when I caught up to him at the light and asked him about it. I was too irked to do much more than remind him that some of us carry guns because of people like him, and later thought I should have called the cops about it - except I didn't know the law here. Do we have that 3 feet of space between car and bicycle here in Illinois?

Il law reads
The operator of a motor vehicle overtaking a bicycle shall leave a safe distance, but not less than 3 feet, when passing a bicycle and shall maintain that distance until safely past the overtaken vehicle
Thats from the IL Vehicle code 625 ILCS 5/11/1501. The three foot minimum was added effective 1/1/2008

Glad you're ok.

Thanks. He just shook me up a bit, and I returned the favor by pounding on the passenger window at the light to ask him if he did that on purpose. I'm not that big (6' and about 195 pounds), but I think he got the point that he did something bad.

So the old fart buzzed you 'just because he could'; too bad your pounding on the window didn't shatter it. After all...you could.

I looked to print this after being buzzed again, and here's where I found it. It's the same text, but a different reference number.

9-36-010-c Overtaking on the left - Permalink - ShareThis

The operator of a motor vehicle overtaking a bicycle or individual proceeding in the same direction on a highway shall leave a safe distance, but not less than 3 feet, when passing the bicycle or individual and shall maintain that distance until safely past the overtaken bicycle or individual.

Too bad there isn't concealed carry laws in Illinois. I own 3 handguns, and I know how to use them.

Let the flames begin.

Yes, because adding assault and/or manslaughter to the mix is always a good idea.

Yes, but it's good for picking off the "dogs" who try to attack you while riding.

Print out a couple of these and hand one out the next time a situation like this occurs.

I doubt there have been many accidents from cars buzzing cyclists. Fatalities happen because either the motorist isn't looking out of the window, or they don't realize how wide their mirror/trailer is. So I assert that shooting these people is not a good idea.

In spite of the law , I find motorcyclists are the one's to wizz about with little regard for passing laws. While feeling the need to blow a snot rocket, just today, as I maneuvered for such; my bike wobbled a bit. At that time, a motorbike passed super close.. He saw my wobble.. to avoid me, it looked like he was gonna go down. He then wobbled and I thought I might have to do a bunny hop over his wreckage.. So in spite of the laws, don't wobble.
Pretty much in the EU laws favor the cyclist. and such occureneces are rare, but when it happens it seems motorbikes are the culprits..
Reason in the EU cyclists feel more secure. The photo below. In the country no vehicle can pass in less than 5 feet. If they do and you go down, they are at fault and they will go to jail.
