Riding with the Mayor
Last month I was riding with a buddy in the Inner Harbor area of Baltimore. We met a guy who works at City Hall in the women and minorities business development office. He was on a road bike. Long story short, I got included on a email list for weekly rides. Last week a bunch of us met at City Hall and rode up to Charles Village with the Mayor who was dedicating the first bicycle parking stand occupying a single car space in the street. Today we meet again and ride with the Mayor on the promenade which rings the waterfront and head to Fell's Pt. and return. I didn't know she was such a cyclist. Now that the days are getting longer the rides are in the evenings, but all through out the winter it was 6:30 am. She's been on a lot of those winter rides from what I hear.

Was she riding the Red Madone or the Blue Madone? It's important.
Good to hear that your Mayor is out there in the real world. Always a good sign. The mayor over here owns one of the seven bike shops downtown (it's not a big downtown, every fourth business is a bike shop). She's been a big advocate for a bikeable city.

Just got back. From where I started and returned, I did 28 miles. There were perhaps 20 riders, all city employees from what I gathered. We were rolling. A lot of road bikes. She is on a hybrid sitting pretty upright. I'm on a heavy MTB. Speeds on the street were in the 14-17mph range. For me, that's hauling. My bike weighs 42lbs with all the crap I bring along, plus I have a Krypton Fugetaboutit lock around my waist. She's in pretty good shape. Total trip she did was in the 16 mile range.

Well at least your mayor walks the walk. In seattle riding with the mayor would entail a bikeless 10 SUV blast through town all the while talking about banning plastic bags and bottled water.
However the city council did approve a pretty big bike plan a while back, so it's not all bad.
