Ride of Silence

Man, I wish I would have found out about this a bit sooner. I may have been able to get some press and organize something here. I really like the concept. I'll at least be out with my family to honor the event's intent.

Why 12 mph? Is there some significance?

I learned about this ride on Texas Hell Week. One of the speakers was the widow of the cyclist who died. My regular cycling partner who is active in the League of Michigan Bicyclists and in the safety aspect of our local club was the contact person for our area. I was and am still out of town (in california visiting my daughter) and missed the ride. They did an area between where a Wolverine cylist was killed last year and where another cyclist was also killed. Here is an excerpt from a friend in Columbus Ohio about their ride:

Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to see if anyone there did a Ride of Silence last night. I thought I saw one or two in Michigan on the Ride of Silence website. We had a good showing here in Ohio. We rode from the Capital building, up High Street (Jeff obtained a parade permit and we had a police escort) to Arcadia (just north of campus), down 4th, over 1st back to High to the capital. It was a 10 mile route and I couldn't believe that it was, for the most, part quiet. I'm not very good at estimating group size but we think there were between 200-300 riders. It was a very touching experience which more than once almost brought me to tears.

Jeff was key in organizing the event...but the kicker is he couldn't attend b/c he left for Florida yesterday morning for work. But, on a good note...Jeff brought his new Waterford with the S and S couplings and he said it worked great. He called and said it only took him 23 minutes to put it together.

Take care, hope to see you all on the road soon.
Julie

We had one in Tulsa yesterday. I was one of the most unique cycling experiences that I have had. Ours was about 8.3 miles. What and awesome sight! We had two abreast and about 400 participants. We had a police escort so we did not have to stop at any of the lights.

Many there had been injured by a car at one time or another. Others were friends or more with cyclists who had been killed. Then there were people like me who just supported the cause.

Sounds cool! I will try to organize something for next year. Coleen, *****, and I just cruised along the river for about 10 miles enjoying each other and the scenery.

It may have not been soon enough for you to organize a ride but I did post about it

Seven bicyclists showed up for the downtown San Diego ride. They even briefly picked up a police escort.

Only 7? For a city the size of San Diego, that's pitiful. I just heard about the ride 3 days after it took place :(
