What about boat trailers !!!!
 

A simular rant as the SUV one , week-end boaties & wanabe sailors towing their boats behind (usualy an SUV) the trailer is wider than the towing vech.the driver will pass you giving you plenty of space & without a backward glance ,will nearly rip your calf muscle off with the rusty mudguard (fender) of his boat-trailer!!

Giant bicyclist rakes I figure. On of my favorite routes has a lake up the road and I have to keep a special eye out when the shoulder gets narrow. I'd like to think the sailors are more careful but haven't seen as there are not that many sailors around here (sailing requires a little more skill and thought than your average power boat, unless you do your own repair work of course).

Boat trailers don't hurt cyclists, inattentive drivers do.

More than my fair share of close calls have involved boat trailers or lawn care trailers which are wider than the tow vehicle.

Too many drivers hook up a trailer without hooking up their brains.

When I was about 13 or so I was riding down the street and nearly got hit by a houseboat. The guy towing it took the turn to quickly and the thing filpped over on it's side and came sliding up behind me. Kind of like the boulder in Indiana Jones.

Nearly got my head taken off by a mobile home on the back of a trailer a few weeks ago. It stuck out about 4/5 feet from trailer and just passed over my helmet.

I have the same problem with people that haul landscaping trailers. They pass with the truck just fine, it's the trailer that gets too close for comfort.

landscaping trailers are bad...but have you guys been passed by a horse trailer before? whew! I got to experience that about 50 times a few weeks ago, when there was a horse show at the fairgrounds. I'll tell you, not only does the trailoer get uncomfortably close, there is this aweful stibk after it. kinda lik insult to (almost) injury.

Horses smell good and are an alternative means of transportation. Want a really bad smell try pigs.

I don't think you can blame a certain type of vehicle. Bad drivers also tow boats behind Volvos, Chevy's, and Toyotas. The problem as you state it, and as it is in my experience, is that most driver's don't know how a trailer acts in all situations. It can move around, sway from side to side, making their vehicle twice the width they think it is.

The ones I hate are the construction vehicles, large trucks towing empty trailers. The drivers generally know how a full load reacts, but an empty trailer tends to bounce all over the place.

The only soultion - and, I guess, the solution to my problem in the thred I just started about being more noticeable - is to keep your head on a swivel, checking your mirror very often so, if need be, you can get out of the way.

Living near the Washington coast and near dirt-biking areas I can tell you that, whether towards cyclists or their fellow motorists, people towing trailers bearing motorized toys are by far the least considerate driving critters out there. Maybe it's what those little engines whining behind you do to your brain.......................
