Bicycle Helmet Saves Man in Asheville Shooting, Suspect Arrested

A man was arrested and charged with shooting at a man on a bicycle, but his helmet saved the victim’s life.

Investigators said the gunfire erupted on Tunnel Road in Asheville when a man was riding his bike with his wife and 3-year-old son.

They say a man approached the father, upset that he was riding with his child in a bicycle seat in a high traffic area.

Authorities said Charles Alexander Diez, 42, got into an argument with the other man and that Diez pulled out a handgun and shot the victim.

They said the bullet struck the man’s helmet, passing through the lining, but stopping short of hitting him in the head. Authorities have charged Diez with attempted first degree murder.
He is being held in the Buncombe County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

The helmet didn't stop the bullet; it went right through, but missed his head before coming out the other side.

Agree, the helmet only provided evidence that there was a bullet fired near his head. Had he not been wearing a helmet, he would have maybe lost a few hairs if the bullet were that close. Styrofoam didn't deflect an otherwise deadly bullet.

Tell that to the people who think a helmet will protect you from absolutely anything (journalists, P.O.B.'s, general morons, et cetera).

It's just more pro-helmet propaganda, conveniently worded and packaged so their mantra can seep into the brains of others and proliferate. Same way some motorists try to argue that airbags negate the need for seatbelts via creatively-worded articles.

You're right. I was on Urban Velo and read of it in a different report

that's a bit more clear than the original story posted that said

Actually, the helmet may have saved his life.

That big "darth vadar" look changes the apparent profile / center of mass of head, may have caused shooter's aim to be a bit high, then add in the inherent inaccuracy of shooting a handgun, and you got a "miss".

Styrofoam would have to be very thick to stop a round, even a 22lr, or pellet gun, for that matter.
