Honkdom

Got another honk from a motorist, when I was 'taking the lane'.

It is maddening when motorists are conceited, ignorant, narcissistic and, downright stupid.

I guess, by 'taking the lane', I am my own Critical Mass. Because motorists are too stupid to think of a cheap, more ecological form of travel.

Are you going to start a thread every time you get honked at?

Honks are only a problem if you allow it to be so. Most motorists, as people, are very similar to most cyclists.

I haven't done that EVERY TIME. Besides, I bet you DON'T mention EVERY TIME a driver gets too close. You also have no idea, how often I get honked at, whether it be small or big.

You are right, I do. Here is why:

Conceited-Motorists feel they have more important things to do than cyclists so, rather than 'Share the Road', they honk to get what they see as an irritant, out of their way. They always have a 'me first' attitude.

Ignorant-Motorists are ignorant to the ecological damage they are doing to the ozone layer, every time they drive, when they can get somewhere, via another form of transportation.

Narcissistic-Motorists don't care about anyone but themselves, when they are on the road.

True, But can you extrapolate on that, as to the similarit(ies)y?

bhop 08-24-09 03:01 PM

Someone honked at me yesterday while I was taking the lane. I didn't care.

gmule 08-24-09 03:25 PM

If they honk that means they see you

Conceited-Immature Cyclists feel they have more important things to do than anyone else, so, rather than 'Share the Road', they begin to see everyone else as an irritant, and want them out of their way. They always have a 'me first' attitude.

Ignorant-Immature Cyclists are ignorant to the damage they are doing to everyone else's perception of cyclists, every time they ride, ...

Narcissistic-Immature Cyclists don't care about anyone but themselves, when they are on the road.

Sometime it takes a little tweeking to get closer to the truth!

Frankly, you deserve all the honking you get.

I got honked at one time, and gave the guy an earful. As he pulled past me, I saw that it was a co-worker with his little son in the car. He was just honking to say hello. :o

These people exist, and you'll run into them everywhere you go. It's your choice as to how much you allow them to annoy you.

Maybe you get honked at a lot because you weave all over the road???

G-money 08-25-09 02:01 PM

I used to get frustrated by honkers until a little old lady give me a honk, proceeded to pull WAAAY out into the next lane to pass and gave me a nice wave. Some asshats honk to show their displeasure, but I think many peopel honk to let you know they are passing -- maybe misguided, but they are trying.

Exactly be glad they saw you! Considering what is out there in the minds of some drivers, I would take a honk any day.

StrangeWill 08-25-09 03:38 PM

I'm going where you live, and I'm going to lay on my horn and follow you EVERYWHERE YOU GO.

I think I can remember every time I flipped off someone who was just saying hello. Who knows if it has happened more than I know and the person just never said anything? I figure the wave like you know them strategy has that going for it too. I am pretty sure I waved at one person until they thought they knew me, even though they didn't. It's all fun at that point. I figure it's the best way to screw with people, flipping off an angry person does exactly zero to change their attitude. They are already angry with you, you're just reinforcing that even though they were being stupid.

Weaving in its' true context would be, constantly switching lanes. Which I do not do. That would be terribly dangerous.

By 'taking the lane', there is less of a chance of 'weaving' within the same lane, due to a motorist that passes too close. To use a common term from the http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072519/ Jeffersons, I consider anyone who does that to me, to be a '******'.:roflmao2:

99.9% of the time, I don't either. I just shake my head to tell them, I am not moving.

Both philosophically and, theoretically put. Nice job.

Thankyou, That will just toughen my resolve on 'taking the lane'.

That must have felt embarrassing after, you realized who it was. Did you go into work the next day, mortified by what you said to him?

I know that some do the honk, as a way of letting you know, they just want to pass.

But, In the DC-Metro region, that isn't the case. Around here, they honk to get you out of the way. The only time I get a honk from behind, that doesn't bother me a bit. Is when I am in the lane with a bunch of cars at a traffic light and, the driver at the light, isn't paying attention to the light having changed.

In one way, that is bad, in that, people don't do anything but rush. At the same time, I don't like sitting behind a car for eons, at a light, when it goes green.

Then do me favor and, have your horn redone so, it has a musical tone to it. Wearing a Walkman while riding my bike is illegal.
