Centaur2007 has some very spot on advice. And I speak from the perspective of someone who has had a carry permit for 27 years now. Except my favorite carry on the bicycle is a Taurus 651 revolver in titanium, for the lightweight and corrosion resistance.

Nope, never have and never will. Yesterday I guy in his big SUV blocked an intersection I was trying to get through. I found a good hard tap on his rear glass may have gotten his attention as I sped off. Although I have been tempted to carry a few large ball bearings to throw. Today as I rode past a fenced in dog park I heard a woman tell her collie "Get the bike. Get the bike". If I had a gun I would have been tempted to use it. On her, not the dog. As it was I told her, "Wrong thing to do lady. I carry Mace." Which I do. Hummmm, ball bearings and Mace. Yes!!!!

As someone who has never carried and never needed to I have to agree. My sisters first boyfriend was a future cop. He also felt guns were far overrated. In one conversation he told me that if I had a pistol I could empty it at the lightbulb less than 15 feet away and the odds were I would not get a single hit. (And lightbulbs don't shoot back).

I've never had any problems. I'm a fair sized guy and rarely look like I'm holding enough of anything to be worth the bother, but rarely so ratty looking that I look like I wouldn;t be missed. That is not to say everywhere is safe for me, there are lots of places that are not safe for anyone. I just rarely have any reason to go anywhere near them.

I ride my bike at night all the time with no FEAR and no gun, and I live in Brooklyn, NY.

People who bike ride with guns are no different than a gang member or thug. The only difference is you're a legal thug who waits for trouble to happen just so you could shoot people. This guns carrying mess is too extreme, dumb, and only adds more wood to the fire.

The only thing I'll be shooting while riding my bike is film. My camera setup is the best weapon to use for shooting people, cause it won't kill them.

Peace.

Well put Donald. BTW, nice PhotoBucket pics.

Centaur2007 has posted words of wisdom. This thread is so long, and so old, I am not sure if I have posted in here already or not. I have not attempted to read all the posts in here. One important thing to consider before carrying any weapon is one's anger management skills. With any weapon that requires major movements, such as throwing or striking, there is time to reconsider one's actions up to the last moment. A bullet cannot be recalled, and pulling a trigger can be all too easy. Drawing and presenting a firearm, without justification, is itself a crime. A firearm is not to be used to "scare" someone, or to punctuate a sentence, or enhance one's gestures or body language. The bottom line is that carrying a firearm is a tremendous responsibility. At B&N, Borders, and such, right now, is an excellent softcover book by Massad Ayoob, with a title of "Combat Handgunning," or something close to that, with a copyright date of 2006 or 2007 for the latest edition. I have skimmmed through it, and it sems to be an excellent primer. Mas wrote the original excellent book on this subject, titled "In the Gravest Extreme," some number of years ago, but it went out of print; it had become dated pretty badly in some areas. As for the original question, yes, I do carry a firearm while cycling, originally because I wear a police badge, but I will continue when I retire. I like a bit of heft, and will carry heavier guns that some have recommended here. The smallest revolver I normally carry is a Ruger SP101, and I will also carry my SIG P229 duty autoloading pistol.

Carrying a gun is okay i guess. But you'll get more respect with a permanently mounted setup. Here is What i use:

The gun is former Soviet and therefore cheap and readily had.

You can get a Machine Gun Handle Bar Mounting stem from performance and i think price point carries them too but i'm not sure.

All that firepower and you couldn't stop someone ripping off your pedals (and most of your spokes)?

Centaur2007 great post... I dont know if I will ever carry on a bicycle... but I routinely carry otherwise... a lot of my carrying depends on dress and season... summer usually has me carrying my Keltec 380 in a pocket holster... all other seasons I use either a Glock 27 or a H&K P7... love the P7 but its action doesnt necessarily make it a first choice for a CCW in the hands of most people...
