Trouble at stop signs?

Seems like stop signs don't mean what they're supposed to. Several times I've had some idiot pull around me to my left as I'm slowing (to look for traffic). They'll go all the way over into the other lane, not even attempt a rolling stop and then gun it to get ahead of me. It's a quiet intersection with next to no traffic, but still! Does anyone else see people doing this? Is it just because I'm on a bike, or what?

It's because they're morons. yes, it happens all the time. Bonus points at stoplights if they try to get around you before you get to the light, you hold your ground and they wind up stopped in the oncoming lane.

It's not just stop signs that drivers are doing this at, it's also stop lights. I've had it happen to me in the recent past. Although fortunately it generally seems like a fair amount of time passes between such encounters.

Happens a lot...I think of it as a little tip from god that the driver is a moran.

Apparently "Stop" is the new "Go." Who said English wasn't a dynamic language???

For some reason, JAMs feel so strongly that we are holding them up that they will race us to a red light! WTF?!? I see it almost daily on my commute home. I spent 4-1/2 years in the US Army, and I know all about hurry up and wait, but to do it ON PURPOSE?

People like this always make me chuckle. I'm still waiting for a cop to come cruising around the corner and meet one of these morans sitting in the wrong lane.

Gets done with motorcycles and even with other cars. I have nearly had collisions next to me because of this weirdness. Seems some mental defect affects about 20% of the drivers. Afflicts some cyclists, too.

Bizarre, but too common.

Ah, stupid driver tricks, they do it to each other as well.

I was on a bicycle, in a left turnout lane, arm straight out left, stopped at a stop sign. JAM, pulls into the lane to my left to run the stop sign. What's really sad about this one, the lane to my right was completely clear.

Another one I saw driving, 4 lane road, everyone stopped at light, there is a left and right turn out, light turns green, JAM in left turn out lane turns right. I saw this one twice in one week

Third, I am on a bicycle, in a through lane on a street, there is a right turn out, JAM in right turnout lane rolls down window and yells at me, that I should be to the right. I yell back, "then you couldn't make your turn, I am where I should be", I was pointing straight ahead....

That's why you get into the middle of the lane when approaching a stop sign, even if you're turning right at the intersection. Idiot drivers are less likely to pass you if you take the lane.

Sweat not the small stuff. Don't even give such drivers the benefit of your indignation.

Motorists often treat stop signs the same way that bicyclists do... so why are we surprised?

While it's not possible to prevent all "pass the cyclist unsafely at the intersection" encounters, I found that by paying attention and being proactive I can prevent most. The key is to reduce the instances where you and a motorist reach the stop sign at about the same time. I call it "Decide and Make it So".

As I monitor traffic behind me, I decide early on who will get to the intersection first. Then, if necessary I take steps to help make it so. This may mean that I speed up a little and move even farther left to make it clear I'm first, or that I allow myself to coast down a little while moving right to encourage an early pass where it is still safe to do so, making it clear that I want them to go first. Not fool proof of course, but it seems to work well for me.

Think of it this way... he's making sure that if there is a hidden cop giving tickets, he and not you will be the one to get it.

I've had a simular incedent happen to me. When I was approaching a stop sign, I pulled right of center only to have a vehicle behind me go left of center just to beat me through the intersection.

fyi keep your mouth shut around morons/or morans as someone thinks it's spelled.
