Perhaps that works in your village where you can feel special as 'the guy who bikes' but in highly populated areas with literally thousands of cyclists it's a bit different.

BTW, I saw a woman get plowed down the other day for crossing the bike path without looking. Here they are for transport, not leisure.

EDIT: It's not about you not dying, it's about the inconvenience and danger to others that's caused by idiots cycling with headphones that can't hear when people try to communicate with them or simply hear people coming up behind them and move over. Telling that you thought it was all about you.

Here's what you apparently read: People operating multi-ton machinery are dangerous, but kittens, puppies, pedestrians, and cyclists are never a danger.

See, you actually agree with spare_wheel, but for whatever reason you don't like him stating the proportionality of danger. His view does not preclude your experiences with clueless peds and cyclists.

Because riding at a walking pace for the 100 feet of play area was the most reasonable and appropriate speed for the conditions. I see no logic in your suggestion.

Not everyone is either speed obsessed or always seeking a "health" benefit from every activity.

I've noticed the same types of behavior from both the wired zombies and the unwired, so I'm beginning to question the whole premise here. Further, I realized that my snap judgments pertaining to a given cyclist are usually based on where he's riding and his movements and not on the wires, which I tend to credit with some significance only after the cyclist has done something to warrant it. Perhaps we are guilty of fastening onto a visible aspect, and reinforcing a pre-existing stereotype when we blame the ear-buds and head phones.

Yeah...like the million or so people "who don't count" who are slaughtered each year by people driving.

I often experience very mild annoyance when I am slowed down for a fraction of a minute by a cyclist wearing headphones on the Hawthorne Bridge. I get over it.

Slowed down? It's a safety issue when people are so absorbed in their music that they don't even realize other people are around, and are unable to hear their bells or shouts. Why should bikes be any different than cars in this regard?

It was manufactured in the ROC -- a democracy with a far better social safety net than latvia (how's the crypto austerity for the little people working for ya, btw?). The entire drive train and shifters were manufactured in Japan. The stem and bars in ROC. The only questionable component is the seat post that was manufactured in the USA -- a failed democracy imo.

So a news article uses a few anecdotes to make a correlation between headphones and inattentive cycling, asserts, based on a few anecdotes that these cyclists are a menace, and further makes the correlation that this menace would be stopped through licensing. Pure journalistic gold.

Also, note this gem:

Yet the causative fallacy is written anyway.
