Dangerous Defects in Panaracer CROSSTOWN tires!

Ride on Panaracer Crossstown Puncture Resistant tires? You better watch out, I've had one blow out, and another one nearly did due to a defect in the tread.

The damaged area that I found before my front tire could blow out

I purchaced and installed two tires just prior to Cycle Oregon 2009.

Less than two months later, my rear tire blew out while I was commuting home. The gaps between the tread had cracked and the tube managed to squeeze out. I felt the tire failing as I was riding. It suddenly started "thumping" like I was riding on concrete with seams, despite the fact I was asphalt. Before I could stop to inspect for something stuck in the tire, it blew.

I carefully checked the front tire, but it was fine. I took the destroyed tire back to REI, and was refunded the purchase price.

Last week, I just pulled up to my door, and as I was getting out my keys, I noticed that the tread was seperating on the front tire.

Exposed threads showing in the cracked rubber.

The defective Panaracer CROSSTOWN Puncture Resistant tire

I noticed cracks that allowed threads to show all around the tire, it was not a cut from debris. I took the tire back to REI and again I was refunded.

I recommend anybody who uses these tires to carefully look for the cracks I found, and get the tires replaced before they have a blow out on a ride. I'd also recommend that the manufacturer recall them.

Be Safe Out There!
