Wow, that is freaking sad. I tell you if I had seen someone doing that my first reaction would be to kick them in the head. I am not to worried about minding my own business

How to prove a bike is yours.... easy if you have are pre prepared.
First we need to make a random SN#
we could go here.
https://www.random.org/passwords/
I would suggest something around 14 characters.
Like: hJq45U6XcwX4Np
Then add your birth date on the end. Like this: hJq45U6XcwX4Np022979
Now you have a nice random sn with a personal identifier on it.
Etch it clearly on your bike in an out of sight location, be sure it is protected from damage. No use in having a SN# that cant be read.
Now make a registartion card that matches your bike and keep it on you. Mine is stainless steel with etched characters. It is painted the same color as my bike and laminated for protection.

had to laugh when I watched him cutting the chain with a hacksaw in Astor Place. I once completely forgot to lock my bike at the bike rack across the street from there at the Starbucks while I was rehearsing for 6 straight hours at the Public Theatre. Walked out and realized my lock was still in my bag and almost had a coronary but what really did me in was when I saw my bike still there, right where I left it, untouched.

The key difference to a lot of things like this is that people see someone acting calmly and purposefully in broad daylight and they assume that person has nothing to hide. The best bike thief in the world is probably someone looking at his watch often and muttering under his breath about keys and lateness.
