COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Columbus police officers are searching for four to five suspects responsible for shooting a man Friday night.

Officers were called to the 1000 block of Miller Avenue on reports of a shooting.

Once on the scene officers found Carl Keys, 34, suffering from two gunshot wounds.

Keys told police he was riding his bicycle in the area of Miller Avenue and Kossuth Street when four to five male suspects approached him. The suspects fired several shots, two of them striking him.

He was transported to an area hospital in stable condition and is expected to recover from his injuries.

I wonder why people have such a hatred of cyclists? But not people on dirt bikes, motorcycles or, ATVs'.

Or people simply walking? Hate is hate and it is wrong.

I have been searching for more details on this but...the news stations have no follow ups so far.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the guy was shot over something other than the bike.

I simply have to find a handgun that I can carry while cycling. Even my 642 is too big for my bento box.
I suppose, in the late Fall and Winter, a shoulder holster under a vest or jacket might work.
Does any have any suggestions for successful CCW while dressed in cycling gear?

Possible but...I cant remember the name of the guy here on bike forums that was riding in Columbus and was approached just like this guy was....Our bike forum member never saw his bike again...as I can recall...so speculation is like masterbating...it feels good....but it is not the real thing!

How do you know hatred has to do with this at all? It could just be a mugging or drug deal gone bad. People on dirt bikes and ATV's don't usually find themselves in major cities and therefore don't get shot by thugs.

People get assaulted in cities every day. It usually isn't some sort of hate crime. Here in Philly, there are home invasions of the elderly. Do you really think the criminal is thinking, gee I hate old people in row homes, I think I will break down their door and steal their SS check.

The people in that post/article are typical in crappy neighborhoods. They assault people for no reason just because it is entertaining to them. they assault those they perceive as weaker or vulnerable. This past year in Philly, two teenagers beat a train commuter to death. They cut school and were bored. They didn't hate train commuters. They were evil sociopaths with no supervision. Unfortunately those types of people are everywhere and they will attack anyone.

Article about the young man murdered as well as others attacked in the similar way. None of them were cyclists.

I have no idea what it is like in Columbus. According to the crime rankings it is safer than Philadephia and Camden. Camden, NJ, right across the bridge from Philly is the worst city in America. If you ride through a bad neighborhood, be prepared to be attacked or get a different route or move. That is what sensible people do. They leave. Literally, everyone I know from the city has left over the last 20 years because of the crime.

I was posting in response to the guy that said this had to do with hatred of cyclists. It has nothing to do with cyclists, but everything to do with the low lifes that live in bad cities.

True Camden, Detroit, and St.Louis make the top 3 every year in Americas worst citys!.....Since Columbus is a big college city...Ohio State U...bikes are everywhere...and young kids are more vulnerable ...than us older guys that have been there and done that! You and I know..but some of the younger kids have no idea!

Drive by shootings of bicyclists are fairly common, smallest of 3 named locations where victim was shot.

For those not from Columbus, in that section of town, you're likely to get shot for anything. I'm not dismissing this, just saying around there people get shot for walking, riding, driving, sitting on your porch, or laying in bed and taking one thru a wall. Columbus is also having bumper crop of "lead poisonings" this year.

About 9 years ago I lived in Norristown, Pa. A stray bullet landed in my daughter's bedroom. I guess the shooter hates bedrooms. I sold my house and moved 30 miles away that month.

His speculation is far less crazy than speculating that they shot him over the bike.

A big reason why people don't ride here in Cleveland is because of the social safety aspect. That mixed in with a little old fashioned racism.

Tried a Ruger LCP, LCR, or SR-9C? The LCP weighs about 6 oz less, is about an inch shorter, and carries an extra round over the 642 while the .380 ACP rounds aren't significantly different from the .38 Specials. The LCR is available in .357 Magnum (much more powerful than .38 +P) while only being a couple ounces heavier than the 642. The SR-9C, though a good bit heavier than the 642, carries more rounds in its magazine, is 9mm, and actually has front and rear sights.

I agree that is not the part of town I would want to be riding in at night....but I recall there is a nice neighborhood just a few blocks away? Am I mistaken? Just wait for mayor Colman to respond when the "lead poisonings" top off at over 200 a year...like what happens in other metros in similar size to Columbus.
