Allaire State Park Bike Path Nazi
N.J.,I went to see the son of a friend of mine's son last week who had broken his leg in a high school football game. Of course he had been told that he had to ease up on use of the leg. I told him Casey when you get better I'll ride the bike path with you to help strengthen your leg.
His Dad then told me that the week before he had ridden the path out of Manasquan into the Allaire State Park. When he was actually in the park and while on the path a park cop stopped him and told him he had to leave the park because bikes were not allowed on the path ! I thought he was kidding but said no it was for real and he had been kicked out/off of the bike path in the park because he was on a bike!
You cant make this stuff up! This ride is advertised all over the south Monmouth county Jersey shore and the ride is filled with families etc. . Im going to call the Park and see if I can find out anything more.

"The bike path skirts the hut where motorists have to pay an entrance fee and ends in a big parking lot. Entrance for bikes is free, but you cannot ride a bike past the main parking lot."
Since I've never been there I don't know the specifics, but maybe the park cop was right?

After you adjust yourself to the news that bikes are not allowed everywhere on the path, please read some history and report back on your use of "Nazi."

Many parks here don't allow bikes on paths due to path degradation and safety concerns for hikers.

The website for the park seems to encourage mountain biking and says nothing about riding on paved paths.

I just love how bikes are no longer allowed on bike paths built with ISTEA money, for the supposed safety of pedestrians. You guys must be killing alot of pedestrians on those "bike paths".

As already noted, "A network of trails winds through the park providing opportunities for hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders. The yellow trail at .5 miles, the red trail at 1.5 miles and the green trail at 4.5 miles are easy hiking trails for pedestrians only. The orange trail, which is 16.5 miles long, is a moderate multi-use trail."

You sure that it was ISTEA funding for the trails? Around here most park trails are funded by the park system.

All the city or state had to do was to claim that the path would have some tranportational use and USDOT handed out the money. That would be fine with me IF the city or state actually protected cyclist rights to use the paths at transportational speeds; which few do.
Dig deep into your bike path funding and you might get surprised.

I'm seeing this picture:- [1] people concerned about the environment figure they will ride a bicycle, [2] authorities notice and begin to improve facilities for these environment conscious folks, [3] environment begins to improve, [4] fat greedy people (FGP) with no concern for environment want to use bike facilities for their insatiable greed and pleasure, [5] FGP lobby authorities until cyclists kicked out of said facilities, [6] environment damage continues [7] needs of FGP continue to dominate economic system of most western countries in the world [8] media run by FGP reports all is well and uses big words like "sustainable economic growth" .
