4 cyclists dead in a week in New Zealand
jeez another in a coma. 3 separate incidents. The deaths in cars is also horrific. The whole country needs to just concentrate a bit more and slow down.

One of the injured cyclist died bringing the number of dead cyclists to 5. A 12 year old girl also hit by a truck in another incident.

Four were on secondary rural highways which are two lane roads with narrow or no shoulder and 100kmh speed limit. The one today was on urban street that runs along the city's waterfront. It's narrow when cars are parked along the water side of the road. I often ride it but early on a weekend when it's very quiet, this tragedy happened at a busy time of day but that's no excuse for an idiot motorist opening a car door in front of this poor woman. Theres a major ride in ten days that attracts 11,000 cyclists. There are a lot more bikes on the road with people training and news reports say that four of the five killed were training for this event.

It is carnage, 5 dead on cycles past week. I operated on another cyclist who escaped death by the skin of his teeth last night. I was there til midnight. His sports are over, he will be permanently affected.
Last weekend a bunch of 7 lycra-clad roadie wannabees flew out of a side road in front of me in suburbia. Lucky for them I was doing 25 mph, 5 below the legal limit. I honked, and stopped. They laughed and swarmed either side of me, some going down the wrong side of the road. They are also lucky I am cycle tolerant - I stopped. If I had been doing the usual speed others go down that road, I would have hit 3 of them
They piss me off BIGTIME
I want to take my kids on the road, but these dickheads foster the driver animosity which leads to the intolerance of cyclists, which puts my kids at risk.
I am an old hand in the traffic, and used to bomb upper Queen St in Auckland on a Humber with poor brakes, at 60 k's. I am fairly safe, but my little kids are learning. It is a road jungle out there.

I'm realizing how lucky I was riding my bike when I lived in Chch for 3 months. I rode my bike to work and my commute period was always before sunrise and sunset. I had lot of crazy fast drivers pass me; they swerved away from me and gave me plenty of space as they passed, though.
When my work was done in Christchurch and it was time for me to head back to the Netherlands, my colleagues told me that they were surprised that I haven't had an incident with drunk drivers (especially since I rode my bike during hours when people supposedly liked to DUI). Now reading those news stories, I sure do realize how lucky I am to not have any bad experience with NZed drivers while I cycled during hours that poss the greatest danger to my health! Hahaha.
Well now I'm living in the States, and ever since the Vail Colorado incident, I carry a toy gun while I ride my bike. I had to pull it out once when a driver kept honking at me. Before that I had pepper spray, but that just made the driver laugh and be more hostile; it is no-uses when they have their windows rolled up. Now with my toy gun they swear and then speed away--clearly scared, not knowing it is a toy gun. But that's a entirely different story.
