Guy gets caught trying to steal a bike.

This video's been making the rounds on all the forums the past few months. I couldn't find it posted anywhere on these forums so I just thought I'd share.

How would you have handled this? I think that guy did everything in his power and avoided antagonizing the thief and his buddy just enough to avoid getting jumped. I probably would've pressed him more to just pay for the lock and then leave him alone without making a scene. "Yo, just gimme $20 for the lock homie and I'll leave you alone" . I doubt that would've worked but maybe he'd get frustrated enough to throw the money at you and then walk away.

Oh, I missed that one. Thanks.

I guess this thread could be merged with that one or deleted.

Less worry about getting paid for the lock... pack heat and use it.

Just curious, was this in Florida or California? I think he handled this quite well.

Shame it has to be like this. Some people are just punks, then there are those that "see nothing" and let this crap continue. I too think that the bike owner handled this well.
Seems to me this was a loosing battle from the start. IMO, having a gun may have escalated this to another level.

Man, my adrenaline started pumping just watching this.

This is why I carry pepper spray. Not that I'd have used it, but when threats of assault start, just pulling out the pepper spray can put a quick stop to that (providing it's not done aggressively). Also, I would have been calling the cops while I was talking to this guy. He had enough recorded already, and people were standing everywhere if any assault did go on.

(It looked sort of like California, in which case getting a license to carry is probably a PITA)

It was in Long Beach, CA. The link below is the original video with some comments and the story behind the filming by the bike owner.

So, what happened by the end? I don't have the tolerance to watch that much Neanderthalism -- all it wants to do is make me want to go shoot somebody.

Was that the police who showed up on bikes, and didn't really do anything?

The owner of the bike pretty much gives up and let's the thief walk away. Then he tries to reason with the security guys that they should've done something. Security doesn't help him at all, they just reprimand him and blame him for allowing it to happen.

I'd want to shoot that bastard too if that was my bike. Sometimes street justice is the only justice.

Mall security. What's really disturbing is how they blamed him for it happening in the first place.

This is when a running cyclocross-style mount would come in handy.

That and Powercranks.

Bringing a firearm into the picture would have made a bad situation worse, given that this incident took place in Cali.

Recently, local man inadvertently shot and killed his wife while scuffling with a group of teens who the couple suspected of stealing one of their vehicles.

I think the mall security folks should be reported to whoever their boss is -- I would make it pretty damn clear to them that having folks that must SEE the offense happen to call 911 need to find other less challenging work. What if a women came up to them distract and said she was ***** or sexually assaulted. Would they tell her, can't call 911 -- I didn't see anything? Not saying that a bike theft is anywhere as bad as such an assault would be, but just trying to see where their 'logic' leads to.

Reminds me of the old Happy Days episode where Richie and the gang were going to get beat up by 'hoods' at the pool hall. After they were threatened, they old guy behind the counter replies 'I don't know nothin, I just work here'

Interesting situation altogether... reminds me of the time I confronted some teens doing graffiti on a local wall... I ended up in a bad confrontational situation... and it could have escalated poorly in several directions... I ended up merely chasing them off, much as this guy did.

Now to go a bit further... really what are his options. I did not see where he got the actual act on video, just moments later... and it did not appear that anyone was going to help him (and the guy in the blue shirt with bling... I wouldn't have trusted him either).

The security guard was a total idiot. Sure perhaps the cyclist should have used the bike rack... but that doesn't offset the whole situation. The security guard should have phoned 911 right away.

I went to the web site of this video and it appears that the cyclist has some strange issues in the first place... thinks there is some "social network" after him, or something... anyway he is whack too... which is why he was running the vid in the first place. So that further compounds the whole thing.

But back to the issue at hand... what would you do. What could you do?

Mall security in Long Beach = scumbags.

The question that he should have asked the security guard is "what is your boss going to say when he sees this video?"

If you check the guy's (the victim/cyclist's) vimeo page cited above, the story gets worse, from more than one angle. For one thing, he claims that he is being 'group stalked' and that's why he carries a camera attached to his messenger bag at all times. He also says he's had other interactions with that security guard and on this occasion, locked up his bike, went into the store (a Walmart) and came right back out again, expecting to catch something going on.

Without doubt his bike was being messed with, and the 'bystanders' and likely the guard appear to be in on it, but something is fishy with the guy as well. Read his many many comments and links where he talks about the 'stalking' going on by un-identified 'religious and cultural groups' and make up your own mind about how much credence you give him. Don't worry about him reporting the crime though, it sounds like he has reported it to everyone, probably including the President.

Of course, being paranoid does not mean that they aren't out to get you.

Exactly... "group stalked..." Jeeze gotta wonder what he is smoking. On the other hand if he did catch this guy messing with his ride...

And certainly at about 0.8 in the vid, it sure looks like somebody is messing with the bike.

I see a bike wire being cut, for sure. I'm also sure the guy in orange is the thief's accomplice, likely the thick guy in blue is also. Typical Gypsy MO at work. At least here, I see group stalking going on. The so called security guys obviously have zero desire to do anything but collect a pay check. My bike was stolen outside where I work ( casino), in broad daylight. The scumbag management never showed me the video and said it is up to the police to come get the video. Never happened.
