I don't see the connection. It sounds like you have an under-lying bias against the poor. If you don't, all you need to do is hit your brakes.

Most in this forum will not be familiar with riding conditions in the Philippines. Ride where and when it is safe for you.

If you are riding in an area where you know that there are going to be children, than rider slower and with more care. It's your responsibility to avoid hitting anyone or anything.

Children in most (if not every country) will often play in the street in quiet residential neighborhoods. Again, it is your responsibility as the operator of a vehicle to avoid hitting anyone or anything. If you cannot do that, than I suggest that you start walking until such time as you can operate your vehicle safely for all those around you.

I'm not familiar with biking in the Philippines, but ...

Here, if I see kids playing, I'll slow down a bit, to be ready to avoid them, but it's no big deal. I can't imagine kids there are so much faster or more unpredictable than kids here.

Personally, "where the poor and desperate lives" made me think more of crime than hitting children. Again, I don't know about there, but here, the people in the "bad" part of town are usually nice and friendly, even more so than the "good" part of town -- but even so, I know that doesn't apply to everybody, so I try not to be too interesting.

As long as you have strong wheels, you don't need to worry about it. Also, once you earn a reputation, they'll get out of your way.

I was about to blast the OP until I saw the location. "Poor and desperate" in the PI is a hell of a lot poorer and more desperate than almost anywhere in the US.

Should you? Sure, why not? Just be careful.

You need to turn adversary into opportunity!... put a giant kebab skewer on the front of your bike and when you get home throw it on the rotisserie, season to taste, serve with a side of flava beans and a nice chianti.

I've biked in the Philippines for years and also in New York City,
how you ride plays a big part in avoiding collisions with pedestrians
and other folks sharing the road.

I'd be much more concerned riding among the desperate than the disparate. What exactly are the desparate ... perhaps a combination of the two?
