A few years before I was the victim of vandalism, knife through the sidewall. They gave me a discount. I'm sure they made money, but not much.

Somewhere I got the impression that the police questioned all of his neighbors and a number of them identified him as a potential perp. The story says that he went to the station to turn himself in, but that could mean that he came to the conclusion that they were going to catch him eventually. Probably not too hard to figure out which person living on that road bought a large supply of tacks if you ask at the right walmart.
As far as the question above asking how you might crash because of this, I can imagine swerving to avoid tacks in the road before you realize you already had a flat. Riding on a front flat is very dangerous, I consider myself fairly skilled at riding a bike and that is one thing that scares me. For one thing, you have to brake very carefully. If you do get a little sideways you are going down hard. A totally flat clincher tire will come right off the rim under those conditions

One of my favorites are the boozers that are too cool for the rest of us. Driving or riding around as a passenger getting plastered, they pull into a parking lot or on a side street and leave their bottles on the road, right where the tires of a car would track. Today was a bad day for that, not to mention the one's who drop a nail or an exacto knife/case cutter blade onto the roadway.
