New bike law in LA

This could get interesting.

"Under the new law, sponsored by Councilman Bill Rosendahl, any car driver who "harasses" or deliberately distracts a bike rider is committing a crime for which the bike rider can sue for and receive monetary damages."

Yeah! That what this country needs - more lawsuits less common sense.

It isn't what happened, but what you can prove happened.

So the people who try to take my left elbow off with their right-hand mirror can be sued for harassment? Oh, happy days!

Now, how do I prove it?

No surprise LA is first to set the precedent for cyclist harassment lawsuits...

This brings up an interesting point though. What, if anything, can the average cyclist do if he's buzzed or harassed by a car?

Thankfully I've only ever been in a situation where I've been buzzed so close by a car that I felt the need to call the police. And when they arrived, the car was long gone and the officer said he was really sorry, he was even a cyclist himself, but there's nothing he could do unless I was run off the road or injured.

Like this good use of a helmet cam takes time to load but this was for the police dept so resolution was kept hi for detail

I'm sorry. My ESP isn't working that well today and I wasn't able to read through every single thread on the forum until I got home from work and had dinner.

Moved to A&S.

A big part of the solution is going to need to be education. A lot of motorists are still under the impression that bicycles should be ridden on sidewalks only and should be considered as pedestrians. And to a lot of drivers in many areas of the country, sharing the road with cyclists is a relatively new experience.

I also would like to see more education for cyclists. Some of these guys buzz around the streets without a clue as to what the rules of the road are, or what their responsibilities as cyclists on the road are.
