Cyclists getting hit by waves

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44732817...ws-chicago_il/

"Huge waves knock down bikers, joggers — in Chicago"

Watch the video. This is what happens when you ignore the "trail closed" sign.

Looks like fun, though hopefully they didn't have any electronics that was ruined by it ...

Is that not a form of injustice to cyclists? A barrier for the cars and leave the cyclists exposed to waves. Bummer!

Gee, I feel like such a wimp for complaining about our bike paths being under two to three feet of standing water for much of the winter.

Cool vid. I thought we had waves here in Cleveland

GraysonPeddie 10-03-11 08:00 AM

Pardon my off-topic post but what is the last song that I just listened to in the Cleveland video?

It seems to me that the smart thing to do would be to time the wave.

I agree. Unfortunately, the trail is probably thought of by officials as a recreational trail and not a transportation trail. If it was intended for transportation, that would never fly.

That and/or, go along Lake Shore Drive when the weather is bad.

I was thinking the same thing!!

wow that looks like it might hurt getting washed up against that barrier.

ya! Waves are terrifying. I grew up on the Atlantic ocean. There's nothing i like more than swimming in the ocean, but you also learn quickyl that you don't f*** with nature like this. The lakes a bit more stable but theyr'e still huge and powerful. I wouldn't be anywhere near there.

I was on the Lake Shore path the same day that video was shot. Really sucked riding a 49x16 fixed gear 10 miles against the wind, fer sher, but the vast majority of the route was perfectly safe (and the waves were spectacular!) I am told that this kind of wind-driven Lake Michigan wave is nearly impossible to "time", and I can believe that: the waves weren't coming in in nice, even bands, but instead the water was just a roiling, chaotic mass. Most impressive.

The section of the path that was in that video was marked as closed, and it was all over the local news that a section the bike path was closed due to waves. Anybody who got caught in the surf did so because they ignored clear warnings.

That water is COLD.

My mother swam in Lake Michigan back in the 20's and 30's. She said it would take your breath away when you jumped in because it was so cold.

I was on the trail that day - riding a tandem with my GF none the less. We got close to the turn where most videos are shot when a policeman on a loud speaker spouts off:

"You, cyclist, get off your bike and turn around. You can't go that way"

Ok guy, we don't have to get off to turn this thing around and I'll see for myself if I can't go. We decided to pull off before that point but now I am thinking: "Damn, that could of been us on the newsreel with our goofy tandem"!
